Can someone explain to me the differance? How does one tell the differance when looking under the bonnet of a 99' civic with a D15B engine? Its my cousins car and he thought it was a 1.5 vtec 130bhp engine but far from it as far as I can see. I'm wondering is it a VTEC at all or maybe a VTEC E model which i heard is a differant kind of setup. There is no VTEC stamp on the valve cover.

    Thanks

Should be a D15Z if memory is correct, to the best of my knowledge there is no difference atall there both 130brake, the 1.5single cam vtec setup is actually for fuel efficency though so maybe thats where the E is coming from (economical) Plus i dont think they say vtec on the rocker cover, could be wrong though

That's the twin carb non-vtec 1.5, they're around 95bhp...VTEC-E is economy VTEC. There's also the D15B VTEC which is obviously noted on the rocker cover.

The most obvious thing to look for is the v-tec solenoid.

On a 1.5 v-tec or v-tec e it should be the same as this pic, its the small cylinder below the outlet pipe on the rocker cover.

It's a VTEC E chaps. Had a good look at it today. Basically it runs on 12 valves when in 'economy mode' Then after a certain revolution of the engine it opens up the 4 remaining valves. Little green 'econ' light on the clocks which goes off when your in 16v mode. 1.5 VTEC E is 90bhp only so it's a differant kind of VTEC setup and not performance orientated like traditional VTECS. My cousin is gutted now as he thought he had some sort of track beast:P. He may aswell have bought a 1.4 civic as the power is the same.
