Why Can't I Insure My Car?

Hi. I am 28yrs of age with a full licence 5 years and 9 years no claims (i know usually only 5 count). I have the house, wife and kids etc etc and I can be classed as a labourer in one of my occupations (i do a few things).

I am winding down a building & Maintenance company and wanted to shift a ford transit i had. Was willing to let it go for 1500 euro for quick sale and I stumbled across a few ads on donedeal for swapping cars for vans. I swapped the van for the first offer, which happened to be a 95 mitsubishi fto. As it was sunday evening, i couldn't check the insurance, but assumed it wouldn't excedd 1000 euro. OH MY GOD. Nobody will quote me. Not a single quote. Its classed as a category 50 and axa say i need to be over 30 before they can quote me. My wifes insurer says "it will be thousands to insure". They quoted my dads details (he is over 50 with no claims ever) at 1600 euro and would not add me as named driver until i am over 30. How the hell can insurance companies be allowed to do this? I know its a high performance car, but this is crazy. I thought i had landed a bargain. I needed to shift the van and the guy needed something bigger for surfing equipment. He had the car advertised at 2300 and i thought it was a good swap, but now im just really disappointed, because i fell in love with this motor driving home. Now i have to sell it because of our stupid fcuked up insurance industry. I don't suppose i have other options do i? I would be half tempted to register it in spain or something and use it when i visit my mum there, but thats not practical.

It's upsetting alright. Reason(s) You're in the market to nick a car. You have the choice of an FTO or a Corsa. Which do you go for? It's got sex appeal and is fun to drive like you robbed it. Also, you're a risk in it. If I owned that car I'd drive it like I nicked it!

So you drove home in an uninsured FTO? Am I reading that right?
Sorry, but I do not believe that the insurance companies have a case to answer here. You on the other hand.....

    See here OP:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/motor_tax_and_insurance/motor_insurance.html#l1f4da

And from the Irish Insurance Federation's website:
What can I do if I am unable to obtain motor insurance?

The Irish Insurance Federation (IIF) operates a Declined Cases Agreement, which is
adhered to by all motor insurers in Ireland.

Under the agreement, the insurance market will not refuse to provide insurance to an
individual seeking insurance, if he/she has approached at least three insurers and has not
been able to obtain cover from them. In general, the insurer first approached will be
required to provide the individual with a quote. It is therefore important that the
proposer keeps a careful note of the order in which he/she approached each of the three
    companies.

Where an individual has held a policy within the previous three years, the insurance
company concerned is obliged to provide the individual with a quotation. Again this is
subject to the proviso that refusals have been received from three insurers (of which the
    previous insurer may be one).

The only grounds on which an insurer can refuse cover are where to provide insurance
would be contrary to public interest.

The agreement is administered by a Committee made up of representatives of each of the
companies who have signed the agreement. The Committee also includes a representative
of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland and the Financial Services Ombudsman’s
Bureau as external observers. If it is impossible to identify which insurer was the first
approached for a quote, then a rota of insurers comes into effect and the Committee
allocates the risk to the next insurer on the rota.

The Committee can also decide whether a quote is so high or the terms so excessive as to
make the quote tantamount to a refusal, in which case it will review the matter.

For assistance regarding the Declined Cases Agreement, contact the IIF’s Insurance
    Information Service.

How exactly is the insurance industry f*cked up as you so eloquently put it?

Because insurance companies have underwriting criteria?

Because insurance companies dont want to touch imported cars with God knows what mechanical modifications done to them?

Because insurance companies dont want to take on a car that would be very attractive to thieves and likely has rubbish security on it?

    Yaaaaaaa.What a pack of **** they are.
