We have a "thanks" button on boards if we agree with a post or enjoy a comment etc but should we have a "no thanks" button to show our distaste?

Having read some outrageous comments here on some threads by some wnakers about this and that, I think it would be quite useful. What do you think?

Do you think a "No thanks" button would be useful 27 votes

Yes, I want to let poster know I disagree his pityfull comment!

All you need to do is call the poster in question an idiot without actually calling the poster in question an idiot.

No, it would just be abused

Everyone would just 'no thanks' the users they hate, and my ego can't take a beating like that

We had a negative rep button one time but it caused flame wars

Aggregating negative/positive rep is dumb because it matters a great deal how many up or down they received. I also think a user should put their user name to it every time they give a rep. So IMO a "no thanks" button would be really helpful and I can't understnad how it could be turned down.

So we're able to give positive feedback but not negative feedback? Is that not a terribly inefficient feedback process and a part of the bs that is bringing down the world today? If you can't say something nice don't say it at all? That shouldn't be at the expense of honest feedback so people know what other people like or dislike about their posting (which they are free to ignore). A little honesty never hurt anyone.

Yeah, but flame wars are the reason Al Gore invented the internet.

Exactly this, you disagreed with me earlier now I'm going to dislike every post you ever make

If you disagree to that extent quote the post and explain what your problem is. If you have a problem with their posting overall PM them no need to have a go at them in a thread IMO

I wouldn't mind this forum specifically having the thanks feature taken down, even for a week or two weeks

We managed without it for years

there'd be way too many posts with thanks though.

I like to quickly scan over posts to see the most thanked as it is obviously the best/funniest, the rest are just a waste :)

What were the reasone against it?

Almost 3/4 of the voters (to date) are in favour of it. Personally I'm all for it and would take it as far as for each poster to have a kudos rating based on their thumbs up vs thumbs down count. Easy way to weed out the trolls and would / should put more 'value', be it negative or positive, on a users posts - kind of like a credibility rating.

By that logic they could take the entire internet down seeing as how we managed without it.

The Ironic thing about that post is that someone thanked it

Done to death OP - if you disagree with something, seems reasonable to explain why. The thanks button on the other hand though eliminates lots of "Well said" posts that don't require explanation.

Seriously boards is way too cliquie for a no thanks button. It will just provoke people, just like the idea of showing a post was reported. We'll have posts saying "why did you neg me?".

The idea behind thanks is that it's just a positive contribution by one poster to another.

tl;dr Boards.ie posters are too stupid to not abuse it

    See that backwards pointing arrow?????
