    hi

i was just wondering has anyone installed a solar panel in their home and have you any advice/tips on it?

We are buying a new house and we want to be as energy efficent as we can so we are looking at getting attic insulated and walls filled and possibly a solar panel to heat the water.

The current boiler is an oil one, i reckon its quite old. should we stay with oil or switch to gas?

    are these big expensive jobs?

I know there are grants available but are we looking at spending a lot of money on top of the grants?

I'd be really grateful to anyone for any advice you may have.

Insulate, Insulate, Insulate then consider what type of heating you would like. Get advice from neighbours or find a good local heating engineer.
As it`s a new house will it not have a BER certificate which should highlight the buildings defencies.

Have you considered external insulation, when done right its meant to be the best way to insulate the walls of your home

You home will qualify for a SEAI grant/s depending on what you what done. Check out there website here.

As mentioned, external insulation is the best form of insulating your home. There is a €4000 grant available. There are also grants available to upgrade heating and heat controls. There is a grant to cover some of the cost of insulating your attic which is a must, hot air rises and most will go straight through your roof if you don't stop it.

After the attic is insulated ensure to fit an attic heater with a built in frost stat, as your attic will become colder in the winter. These are cheap and once fitted they will automatically switch on when temps drop.
