Just thinking there, with people fast running out of cash. I personally feel that most houses are going to have to drop a bill. So what bill would you drop.

Defo keeping the elecy on in the house and the UPC, maybe drop the Gas as my cooker is on the elecy...

    What would you drop?

There is also the bin charge you can drop , by dumping your stuff in the neighbours bins.

Maybe drop the UPC bill and buy the digi box thing that gives you all the channels free to air except the Irish channels. it's 100% legal and not one of those dodgy boxes!

    Definitely UPC
Nothing ever on the damn tv, and you can watch stuff online anyway.

If you have a landline get rid of it and just keep the mobile. Practically no need for one nowadays.

That's a true point.. So alot of people seem to want to drop the Sky or UPC. Never though about that, would you drop the internet with it too or just the TV side of things.

Drop bin charges. Put all your waste in carrier bags and stuff one into a public bin every morning on your way to work.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I pay the TV licence and put money in Joe Duffy's pocket.

Em.. Joe Duffy is employed by UTV , same people that own Q102 and FM104.

Sorry my mistake. Was thinking of Ray Darcy.

I believe its possible to just have UPC for the internet, and dispense with the TV service.

But he's on RTE radio

I think I won't pay the water charge, what's the worst that can happen?

Just use windows media centre on a pc - output to your tv via tuner card. You can just have a standard basic analog tv signal and still have all the benefits of recording, pausing tv, program guide etc for a fraction of the cost of sky+!

dont have tv channels, everything I watch is American mostly so the net connection does me there, so thats sky/upc and tv licence gone, gas we only use between late oct-jan, they actually owe me money from an overcharge that should cover my bill for the rest of the year.
esb is usually sub 100 quid for 2 months. phone is about 20 quid a month cos I'm one of those crazy people that stays within their minutes, and thats it, not including the yearly stuff like car tax, insurance, that kind of stuff.

I can't recommend getting rid of the TV licence and just using the net connection enough. Not sure about Ireland, but in UK you only need a licence for watching live BBC, you can watch the iplayer without a licence, saves a lot of money.

tv license inspector - here to see your tv license
me - I don't have a tv - sold due to the recession for €200 on adverts.ie (why the adds have never shown this scenario in those adds yet eludes me  )

    quick saving there...

anyone that has Sky - just stream the shows you want to watch and watch streams for the football... hdmi to the laptop and bob's your uncle

before dropping bills, have you tried cutting back? Cheaper TV & internet packages? Use less lighting / CFL lamps? Dry clothes au natural?

If I was to drop a bill it would probably be gas: my apt is very well insulated, and if you're just heating water to wash, it's cheaper to do it electrically on night rate than using gas, if you don't need the gas to heat the space.

Or TV - the internet is my televisual friend

Got rid of the mobile last October, havnt paid the car tax in two months and have started cycling to work. We have our TV license paid for the year, but if it were up to me I'd cut that. The internet provides movies, news and entertainment so I wouldnt miss the RTE at all.

    Still broke! :(

Id drop the gas heating before sky, its essential for matches, golf etc. Steams are rubbish I hate the thought of messing with one when the match is not on telly.

Freesat is a waste of time too no sky1, syfy, history, discovery etc.

Everyone should use webtexts, 300 free a month online. Ya might get away without 20 euro a month for frees if you're a loner.

Do you happen to drive a clk merc?
Seen a guy in a village in a merc creep down the road while dumping bags of rubbish into public bins! Cutbacks fair enough but I guarantee he spent more on petrol to get rid of it than a bin tag!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭x_Ellie_x

I quit paying for my bins to be collected. I store all my waste in an old big shed at the bottom of my back garden and take the rubbish to a recycling centre myself (there's one around the corner from my house) every 2 or 3 months - 4 months during the winter. It works out much cheaper. There's a lot of stray cats in the area and they keep the rats away.

I wouldn't get rid of sky or the internet. They're the only two pleasures I've got left.

    the bad news,

Any type of tv set which may be capable of receiving broadcasts needs a license , so laptop on hdmi to tv still requires a tv license , even if the tv isnt connected to anything else..

disconnect the laptop from the tv and it doesnt need a licence though :)

thinking about cutting my sky altogether. never watch it at all. i just use the net. will save the tv licence also then.

Not how it works. If it can be connected to something that can get a signal, you need a licence for it. According to the citizens information site, you need it for a tv or equipment capable of receiving a tv signal. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/consumer_affairs/media/tv_licences.html

But then, wouldn't we need a TV license for our smart phones???

What do you do with the General waste surely you don't just leave it there? What will you do when the shed is full of just General waste ?

So, even if you don't have a TV or UPC. But because the UPC cable is coming into your house, then your house is capable of receiving a signal.

    That's a bit ridiculous..

Yep, anything with a TV tuner requires a licence. So you'd need to replace the TV with a PC monitor or something similar.

I feed the leftover food to the stray cats. Most food packaging comes in cardboard boxes now and its all recyclable. I've got very little general waste (stuff that can't be recycled). There's a few single people living on my road and they don't fill up their bins anyway so I do wait till late at night and dump my rubbish in their bins. Its only usually a tiny plastic bag at a time.

They pay for their bins to be collected, and you use them to dispense of your rubbish?

Why not pay for your own bin and if it is only a tiny plastic bag at a time then you wouldn't have to put it out very often.:)

The Car, well and truly a luxury now and the yearly cost of running it makes alll the other bills seem miniscule
