22yr old dude looking for a car

I have decided to buy a car sometime soon because I have started a new job up in Dublin. I'm 22, male and I've had my provisional license for 2 years. Basically I want something that won't cost too much when it comes to insurance and because I'm lazy I like the idea of an automatic!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I crazy going for an automatic? Are they actually harder on petrol or is that just a myth? Also I'm quite tall, 6ft 3 so I need something I can fit into comfortably :D

3,500 MAX so something around 2,200 I think should be decent? But im open to anything really.

If you get an automatic & do your test in it you'll only be licenced to drive an automatic. I wouldn't get one as a first car anyway.

You do know that if you do your test in an auto you will have a restricted license right? Which means you will only be licensed to drive automatic cars. This would put you at a big disadvantage imo, and if it's just out of laziness i'd seriously consider changing your mind.

Anyway, a 1.25 fiesta would do the job imo. Cheap to buy and insure, mechanically sound and the engine is pretty good.

Ya it's just a thought... when I do the test I plan to do it in a manual but why not have the automatic? Wouldn't it be cheaper to insure? or does that factor not come into insurance quotes?

For your test do it in something you're used too. As mentioned 1.25 Fiesta would be a great choice.

    Why an auto?

If you consider changing gear to be effort, what is your position on indicating/changing between full and dipped beams, and using wipers? :pac:

I would recommend toyota starlet something like this:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2128607

you'd get one, tax & insure it for your 3500 and probably have change left for a few pints.

Also Re: your height, a friend of mine had a starlet for a long time and he's 6'5" and he never had any problems.

I would imagine most would be more expensive to insure due to the fact that auto's generally have bigger engines than their manual counterparts.

Not sure though. You might want to check that one out.

Autos are not easier to insure. Also the cars tend to be more expensive in small hatchback cars that you would be looking at.

Manual all the way imo, better selection of cars and better fuel economy. You'll most likely be looking at cars with 4 speed automatic boxes, which are quite simply dreadful.

Dudes don't drive automatics. Dudes drive manuals. Some dudes drive automatics if they are unable to drive manuals. That's fine. They're still dudes, but most dudes drive manuals.

Ya I do like it but I think the insurance would be a bit high for me but thanks for the suggestion!

That is very expensive for 3 owners and 11 years old. Not a great car. Look into a ~2003 Corsa

    You're probably right regarding insurance.

Hmmmmm. Yaris isn't particularly to my liking but alas, everyone is different. What about a nice clean Golf for Sir ?

That yaris/vitz looks really tidy and has great spec.2 grand would be fair. Way better built than any corsa

You cant drive the car until you pass your test unless you plan to have a licensed driver with you all the time, so whats the point in buying an overpriced auto that you cant do your test in?

You would have more choice with a manual....and get one for a better price!

This is true. An oversight on my behalf. Thank you for kindly taking the time to point this out.

The Golf is indeed a manual. Also OP, I suggested the Golf because to be honest, you are a 22 year old dude.

I was once in an imported Vitz that had air conditioning, alloy wheels, front and rear electric windows, a cd/dvd player with tv tuner, leather seats and even a boost button that would give you extra power when overtaking.
