Travelling - mobile/Ipod touch question

Okay so I'm going travelling to South America soon and was wondering what the best way to operate the whole phone thing is?

At the moment I have a HTC Sense which I love but my contract is up in October (possibly due for an upgrade but would prefer to shy away from gettin into a new contract until I'm back)

What i was intending to do was this:

    - Unlock the Sense and bring it along with me pay as you go so that I'm still contactable immediately in case of emergencies etc

    - Buy the Ipod Touch 4 64gb for all my music and whatever movies I want to bring with me. I'm told all hostels etc have WiFi in South America and that it's free so that I could use this for Skype and Internet access

Any thoughts? I don't think it's wise getting locked into a plan with an Iphone while I'm away as I won't make use of the minutes etc. I'll be gone for 5 months.
