I have a 2006 Passat with this engine and contrary to everything that is said on boards about this model of Passat it has been nothing but reliable.

The engine is far more reliable than everything which came after. They can use a bit of oil, mine doesn't, but they are a simple enough old school diesel. Performance is adequate and the economy is very good.

I have this VW engine 1.9 tdi 105 bhp in a 08' Touran. Engine seems fine but I have an issue which is widescale in Tourans with the ABS pump. Also, according to the VW dealer service person I spoke to recently he said that 1.9 engine also has the dodgy injectors which is a further kick to me.

    The 2L has dodgy injectors.

As long as the 1.9 is serviced correctly including new fuel filters there should be no need to worry.

Lot's of trouble free examples trundling along the roads with intergalactic mileage

Hey Johnos, thanks I hope you are right, because it's a family car and i don't want it stopping suddenly on me. But your statement does contradict what i was told from the VW service person, and he specifically mentioned piezo injectors. I'll double check this with them again.

I asked my mechanic specifically about the issue when buying and he swears by them as a cheap to service and run engine.

However the fuel filter must be done at every service and obviously don't misfuel it or not service it. The 1.9TDI is an older engine design and more reliable.

He did have one on the ramp when I was in last night for a chat....2008 Passat getting a new engine. He had bought it with a wrecked engine. It was a reps car and not serviced correctly and for whatever reason this cause the conrads (I think he said) to snap and exit both sides of the engine leaving a fist sized hole.

Lesson: Any engine will give trouble if it's not looked after properly
