Hello all, can someone please tell me what this cable does?

    DE6B5439ED5E4F6B88EE24A080AE5ABB-0000327350-0002490802-00400L-3B1C5886367C45D0B95A606EEEFDB8BD.jpg

Obviously it triggers the shutter but why is it attached to the hot-shoe? Is it
    some kind of intervalometer?

    Thanks.

Motion detecting shutter release maybe? But I did a quick Google search there for such a thing, and nothing like this came up.

It could be a remote trigger, like a PocketWizard trigger.

Its a remote/wireless shutter trigger, it is mounted on hotshoe for handiness.
You could just let it hang down and it will still work. I use one similar.
