Hi, Looking to get a Blackberry phone (switch from HTC desire, just fancy a change) but I can't figure out what is the difference in the 8520, 9300 and 9780, although there is a huge difference in price.

    Any info appreciated :)

The 8520 is the base model, it's an old phone and is near the end of it's life cycle. It doesn't have 3G, GPS, low res screen, low end processor etc.

The 9300 is the next level up in the curve series and does have 3G and GPS

The 9780 is from the Bold series and is the top line of BlackBerry. It has more ram/memory, better camera, nicer keyboard, higher res screen etc.

There will be a new Bold (9900) launching soon here (already on sale in UK etc) and a new line of Curve phones launching in a couple of months so the prices on all these phones will start dropping. If you're going for a curve and can afford the extra few quid then go for the 9300 over the 8520 to get the 3G speeds for data connections. I have a Bold at the moment and love it, will be upgrading to the 9900 as soon as Vodafone get the finger out and release it here.

Here are some links to reviews of each device

9780 without a doubt although BlackBerry have just launched a new line of models which will arrive in ireland soon and are a substantial improvement over the ones above although they will cost more when released initially at least.

    I'm awaiting the arrival of a 9900.

I suggest that you try out the HTC ChaCha, it's like a Blackberry except it's an Android phone running the latest version of Gingerbread.

I just bought a 9780 myself and would highly recommend it.

The 9900 which is due out (in network stores) shortly looks like a great device. I don't think it's worth all that extra money though if you're buying it without a contract as I did.

The only notable differences are slightly more pixels on the 9900, 256mb more RAM, OS 7 (new operating system, but QNX will be out next year so I'm waiting for that) and 1Ghz processor compared to the 624Mhz in the 9780 -- stuff your average user isn't going to notice.

They both have a 5MP camera and the 9780 can take a micro SD of up to 32GB.
