Rumbling sound at idle/in gear

    Hey all,

The last day or two I've noticed an intermittent low-frequency "rumbling" from my 06 2L TDI Passat when she's idling or in gear.

If I didn't know better I'd think I had a hole in the exhaust but yet I can't hear this sound from outside the car, or from the engine bay (although admittedly last night wasn't the best time for diagnosis with the heavy rain and this morning it seemed ok again)

I do have a yellow engine light on for a while that I was told at the last (main dealer) service about 3/4 months back was a exhaust glow-plug fault but they didn't have the parts to fix it there and then and I haven't had time/cash to get back to them yet (means a day off work and a trip to Enniskillen) - she's due another service in about 1500km anyway according to the display (which at 200km a day and 184000km on the clock isn't surprising!) but power seems unaffected, no other symptoms and no unusual smoke etc either.

Any thoughts? Also, with that mileage I assume the timing belt is going to be due again shortly yea? (Was changed at around 100000km last time)

    Thanks in advance!

I hope for your sake it's not the DSG box. Free bump tho:)

Never even thought of that... doesn't seem to be any errors/problems there. Still moves up and down the gears smoothly as normal.

I tried to get a better idea of where it's coming from this evening and it does seem to be more from the rear of the car..

    (Cheers for the freebie :))

Had the DMF go already... in fairness it didn't fail as such as it was replaced in time but that "rattle" (it sounded more like a ticking/scraping to me) I'm very familiar with

Anything to check for/anyway of checking without a ramp?

I think you will have to hook it up to VAGCOM for the fuel pump and see if there are any fault codes showing up but AFAIK if they are going they just go.

To check the exhaust you will just have to jack it up and check if it is secure. There should be no play in it on a Passat. It could just be something small knocking off something and making a nice bit of noise

Cheers.. think diags are inevitable alright - really should invest in that VCDS software :o

I'm not sure if it's anything loose as the "droning" seems to be in sync with the sound of the car idling if you know what I mean, but I'll check it out

    Could be it then.

As the car vibrates on tick over it could be shaking something in sync with the engine. Check the free and easy to repair things first ;)

I have a similar issue 2005 1.9TDI got a bit of a noise coming from what sounds like the rear of the enginer block. Its like a low rattle thats only audible when car is idle, I can feel it up through the clutch pedal when I press it in, car running perfectly fine clutch seems fine, gear box seems fine and drives as normal I think there may be something loose possibly. This happened after a long trip in it to Tralee from Dublin, any recommendations. Have to put it in for a service anyway need to get it checked next week. Dont know if I should stop driving it or not.
