Afternoon all. Im heading to Thailand in the next couple of weeks and im wondering if anyone can suggest some nice cheap beach accomodation in the Lamai beach area of Koh sumai. Ive already booked some places in Bangkok and chaing mai after reading so of the threads here but cant find anything on this location.

    Cheers

I stayed in the "Varinda Gardens" in March in Lamai which is a nice series of villas overlooking the bay. It wasn't the cheapest however at roughly €40-€45/night but the whole thing was booked in a travel agency in Bangkok but I think this was the rough cost. It about a 7 to 10 mins walk from the beach and has some really high steps of traverse.

How will you travel to Samui? I'd advise flying with Bangkok air if you can afford it rather than the train + bus & ferry as I had money stolen whilst on the bus from the train station to the ferryport. Keep all your valuables on your person at all times if taking this trip.

Another option would be to just book somewhere for one or two nights and get something when you arrive there as there is loads of little cheap apartments and rooms on offer along the strip in lamai for very good prices, I took a nosey into several of them and I would probably just wing it like this if I ever returned to Lamai again. Lamai is a quieter place and unfortunate has seen the beer bar prostitution culture so evident in Bangkok, Pattaya and Patong creep into town although it is nowhere as in your face as in the above places, still if your a male expect some cat calls whilst walking past. Taxis on samui are expensive so take the songthaew instead !

Cheers.. booked a place called rich resort beach hotel, which is part of the swing bar. 57 euro for the 3 nights. Getting the sleeper down but flying back as we're heading to chaing mai. i wont be leaving anything of value in the bags as i have heard all the storys.
