Who told you the car needed a new ecu? What diagnosis did they base this on?
I would be looking for a second opinion.

Close on 1800 and it might not fix it. I'd be bringing it somewhere else...

I notice in your details you are from Galway.
here where i live a guy in a Passat had a similar issue with his ecu ( Car died)
Local main dealer told him toddle along as a new ecu would cost more than his car was worth.
he was talking to a friend, telling him the story and was looking for a car cheap.
Friend suggest a Polish guy here who is a bit of a wizard.
Went to said Polish guy who told him get the car to him on a trailer which he did.. Polish guy had a look, removed the ecu and opened it up and tested it, and said AHA.!! I see what is wrong.. He got a couple of components from some other ecu he had lying around..Soldered them in place. Put the ecu back in the Passat and it has been running perfect since..Charged him 30 euro or there abouts.
