(Mod's feel free to move thread)

    I have a 04 MK 5 Golf with 58Mls /90Km.

Need to get the timing belt replaced and would like to get a VW dealer to do
    the work. Is this necessary?

I have got some quotes from some VW dealers and they vary a lot. Has any body recently had a similar job done? Could you recommend any places to get the work done (you can also pm as well!!)

    Thanks in advance..

Go to a indy garage and get it done.Bit hard to recommend somewhere for you to go if you don't give your location

I had it done on a similar car from a main dealer for €350. That was a full timing belt kit and water pump.

If you really want to go to a main dealer try a Seat or Skoda dealer as labour rates are usually lower and the oily bits are the same.

Sorry should add that location is in Dublin

Get onto Nissan Doctor on here. He'd probably be able to sort you out.

Assuming they're the same kit as the Mk4, because as far as I'm aware they're the same engine, but the kit is around 115euro, I can't imagine the labour to fit it being 200+ on what's a relatively simple job (for someone who knows what they're doing, obviously).

What are timing belt intervals on a 1.4 petrol VW Golf Mk V? I've been told TB is due after 4yrs, and also 5 yrs/90,000km, by two different vw dealers. Mine is 1.4 petrol 2008 (38,000km) and not due yet but I'm trying to reckon costs ahead at 4 yrs. When I got it serviced earlier this year in a vw garage in Dublin I was told it would cost almost €600 (full kit). Seems expensive?

VW intervals were always ever 4 years regardless of kms/mileage.

600 is crazy money but not that surprising for a main dealer.

We normally charge a little over half that for a full kit with water pump.

Sounds expensive the VW garage near me (Sheehy's in Naas) - are saying €450 for a 1.4 - http://www.sheehymotors.ie/news-article.html?article=VolkswagenTimingBelt

But based on the earlier posts even that seems a bit steep.

Thought it was 4 year intervals myself - imagine a vw dealer told me 5yrs/90,000km. Trying to estimate costs i will encounter when car is 4 years old (NCT, timing belt, etc). Thanks for replies, will take all on board.

Seems after all that my vw golf 1.4 timing belt should be checked first at 90,000km. Apparently, no specific time frame for changing it but advised to get it checked if concerned.

Are you sure about that? As far as I know that was the old advice...I don't think you can properly check a timing belt really. Maybe you'd see some significant weakening but the tensioner is as likely to go as the belt.

That's what I was told recently by VW agent. Does seem odd being based on just mileage. But if concerned get it checked! I'm still listening!

There is a specialist Garage near New Ross in Co. Wexford called Howlett Automotive. Finest Mechanic I have ever come across and his prices are unbelievable!

If you are down that way then definitely worth a visit to get that job done!
Last time I was down there were Dublin people, in addition to myself, that had driven down just to get him to do work including a Mercedes S600 AMG owner who only lets them work on his car!

If your Golf Mk 5 (petrol 1.4/1.6 I presume) has done 90,000km in 7 years without a change in timing belt then it gives credibility to the recommendation I got from VW agent.
It's up to yourself, but as far as I am aware VW say get it checked at 90k. It may well be fine for another 30,000km pending outcome of 90k check. If in doubt get it checked. It's all a bit confusing really.
    We'll get there yet. ;)

    Chevrolet Timing Belt Issue
Hoping a few of the motors regulars might be able to help here.

A friend of mine has a 2007 Chevrelot Aveo with 35,000kms on the car

The timing belt snapped last week, the sevice book say's it should be replaced at 90,000kms or 6 years.

Would they have any recourse with Chevrolet?

The dealer they bought the car from went under at the start of this year

    Thanks

Above post appeared recently on boards. While the car involved is not a VW it is still relevant to timing belt issues. Thought it might be of interest.

Sounds like the car was either clocked or it was an issue from day one which I would have taken up with Chevy.

If in doubt, get it changed. Timing belt replacement: €350. Major engine repairs/cylinder head repair: €1k possibly depending on the car.

Up until recently the VW schedule for timing belt changes were every 4 years. If they now say have it 'checked' (there is no visual signs of the life left on a timing belt unless its literally about to snap) at 90k I can guarantee that a VW garage will never commit to telling you that you have another 30k on it.
