Just curious.....mine was probably a 99 Honda Legend (Weird, I know). Full leather, heated seats etc etc. It was a 3.5 litre petrol

My dad drives a 2009 Merc C220 taxi, anyone ever see it around City Centre ?

IIRC it was an S600, black, felt like I was being chauffered rather than being driven around in a taxi.

Next to that I was in a black Accord Type-R, lovely lovely lovely motor.

A few high spec Avensis as well and also one time, a maroon Alfa 166 V6.

Also in Glasgow, I remember being in an ST Mondeo, that was a nice car.

It's hard to tell it apart from all the other silver C220 CDI taxi's so :pac:

I can't remember my first taxi but I remember my most memorable one. We were in UCD and got one of the yellow cab's Skoda fabia estates home from town one night.

Who knew you could do a burn off in one and then go on to hit 100mph on the stillorgan dual carraigeway with 4 guys in it

    The driver was a little....................NUTS

But gave us the lift for free as he had so much fun driving us out from town.

I remember when I studied in Aberdeen getting a lift home regularly in an Audi RS4 and a E55 AMG.

Both disappeared off the road and I got told by another taxi driver one night that they got caught racing each other with passengers on board one night

The Accord was 2002 IIRC (bit hazy...), I saw it about a year ago, strange car for the job, he must have owned it years and used it to get started in the business as it would have ticked all the boxes for requirements. Lovely motor.

Never been in an extremely nice taxi, but I enjoyed being in a 1 million km Mercedes 250d. Looked nearly new. No rattles. Beat that, Toyota

In Dublin I've had a Lexus LS430 (savage comfort!!) and an Audi Q7
In Cork I've been in an E39 M5 (retired banker turned taximan) and a Nissan Murano

Various Mercs as well. Was in a BMW 730d as well. Nice bus

A 740i BMW E65 from Maynooth home to Lucan one night. Driver was telling me he runs two of them as limos but when he needs a few extra bob in he sticks the roof sign on one and is very picky about who he picks up. That was about 6 years ago. Doubt anyone can be too picky these days!

I call bollocks on most of them, particularly the S600. It was probably a very nice S320 at best.

I usually get taxi's with group of people so therefore don't get the opportunity to be choosy. I'm always unlucky with them too, with them either being ****ty van conversions or tired old Avensis.

There is the taxi driving dad of a taxi driving regular on here (need I say more) who has a setup like that. AMG badges and all :D

I can assure you the RS4 and E55 were genuine as they were legendary among the taxi drivers in Aberdeen. You have to remember it's an oil port hence people with too much cash to spend would be happy to wait for them and spend a bit extra.

They were on the road over there in 2006/7 in case anyone else studied there and remembers them.

The yellow cab Skoda Fabia certainly existed. I'll never forget the smell no matter how drunk I was :D

The Q7 and LS430 are regularly seen around dublin

The M5 was a black 00 and was in it in 2002 or thereabouts. Assumed it was an m-sport til I got in and noticed the seats, dials and heard the exhaust note. Asked yer man about it and he said he spent his whole life working and took early retirement so was working to build up to his state pension or something. Anyway, said if he's gonna be spending hours behind the wheel of a car, it might as well be a car he wants. Legend!!

I'd love to know how people can keep petrol in cars like that...!! It kills me to put petrol in my 2L petrol engine, never mind a 4.3 or 5L

I wasn't referring to your post at all. It's just the thought of someone running a V12 petrol luxury saloon as a taxi that has me sceptical.

    I can't imagine someone choosing a 166 V6 either.

I remember a few big Mercs with V8's being used as taxi's in Dublin back in the mid 90's.

In fact I came across one when I was looking for a classic one last winter. It had a genuine* 89k miles and a very rattly engine

Why? because you didn't see them yourself?

I know for a fact that in 2008 in Dublin there was a 2008 Lexus LS600h operating as a taxi. That's €160k worth of motor so a scabby Merc 600 is well within the realms of possibility. Doesn't make any sort of economic sense to run anything above a 3ltr diesel as a taxi but it's a very nonsensical world out there!

PS: there is currently a 6.1ltr Chrysler operating as a taxi in Dublin, and it's not a badged up 300CRD.

No, I'm just aware of the possibility that someone would exaggerate the sighting of something like an S430 LWB as an S600.

I was in Merc S-class taxis with Nissan diesel 2.8l (90BHP ) conversions hundreds of times in the mid to late '90s :)

Would still prefer one of them old spacious bangers to a battered Carina / Corona

I can promise you it wasn't an S320.

The 166, in a nutshell, the same man was driving taxi's around my area many many many moons ago, he decided to retire, he bought the 166 having done quite well and being a non drinker, so that he and his wife could go away for holidays comfortably and with a bit of style. She died within weeks of him getting the car. He traded his old car against the 166 thinking he was finished with the taxi business. The last time I saw him he was driving an 08 Mondeo.

The Type R, lovely motor, who knows if its still about, surely someone can verify that if you dont believe me.

There are nicer cars out there than you might think.

Got dropped home by a pretty sweet Audi A8 in Amsterdam a few nights ago, never got a look at the badge on the back but it was a frickin palace on the inside.
