Gaddafi steps up the game and Fires a Scud missile!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8703041/Col-Gaddafi-fires-scud-missile-at-rebel-territory-as-Nato-braces-itself-for-final-violent-showdown.html

"Col Muammar Gaddafi's Libyan government appeared to be preparing for a last violent final showdown after it emerged that his beleaguered regime had fired a Scud missile at rebel territory as opposition forces closed in on Tripoli"

"Despite rumours that he is preparing to flee, the opposition fear Col Gaddafi is preparing a desperate last stand in Tripoli and towns still loyal to him in the face of recent rebel advances on two fronts which has cut off his crucial supply routes"

"the defiant Libyan leader addressed his people, calling on them to take up arms and "defend their fatherland" and predicting a swift end for "the rats" and the "coloniser" - the rebels and Nato"

    He has 100 of them!

What is going to stop him firing them?

If he's fired 1 he will fire another! common sense

I Got a link to Libyan state tv live on the internet.

Gaddafi said about 20 mins ago "I will stand strong all who fight me will be destroyed"

Firing that missile earlier is a sign that Gaddafi is desperate and is on his last legs. :D

Gaddafi's a fool - he starts firing missiles ...he's just given the USA, Germany, etc Carte Blanche to say to the rest "Look at this nutcase, if he can fire on his own people, he won't think twice about anyone else" and convince other countries even more to let Gaddafi's ass be bombed to hell.

Gaddafi firing missiles? He's quickening his own demise.

    Either:

    1) An offer of exile from Saudi - 20/1

    2) An 'et tu Brute' moment - 12/1

    3) Suicide - 16/1

    4) Capture by rebels / Kangaroo court? / Death - 8/1

    5) Capture by NATO / ICC The Hague / Prison - 17/1

    6) NATO strike - 8/1

no, he has only 99, ;)

One nato strike on the launcher(s) and they're useless.

If he's in that much of a corner what's to stop him launching them at Rome?

How much longer does everyone think he'll be in "power" in libya?

It appears that he is only in control of the capital, the rest of the country is in rebel hands.

Tripoli is virtually under siege, it's only a matter of time before the population rises against him, despite them being "his" people.

    Exactly. Therein lies his problem.
NATO will no doubt up their game in their pursuit of the launchers using spy satellites and other intel.
With that in mind, Gadaffi will only be able at most, to fire one or two quickly before the launcher is possible ranged in on by tech and intel being passed along to planes flying overhead from at least one of the 17 ships off his coast alone.
It could be a case of "fire" then hide - "fire" then hide again... and the more he does it, the more chances are that sooner or later the launchers will be got by NATO plane missiles or ship fired missiles. All they need is accurate up to date intel (and thats the most important bit).

The launchers every time they want to fire, have to come out into relative open and fire, head back to stock base for re-arming, etc and every time they do that, they are also adding to their own risk. With the rebels closing in in all directions as it appears now, the number of roads that Gadaffi can move these things around is decreasing - and that also means that the rebels as they close in, will be able to spot them a lot more and quicker - then immediately pass the intel to a NATO ship, thus to a plane and bomb it.
Gadaffi is on a fools errand. He just don't know it yet or he's using the missiles now as one more chip to use, a last resort to say "Let me go without any war crimes charges, let me live in peace with my stolen billions" and I won't continue to fire my Scuds.
I think he's buying his time and looking for a best way out. He can't be that stupid.
He seen the Americans alone go after Sadam and Bin Laden - if it has to take years, he knows (or should) that they will not give up - so he will prob' try for the best way out I think, and the scuds are just another 'chip' he's playing (while also having the advantage that if they actually managed to hit a vital rebel spot while doing a rushed targeting, before NATO planes fly in, find and bomb) he wins double for efforts made.

Is interesting seeing al Qaida fellas fighting on the rebel side. So much for Americas war on terror. NATO supplying them with weapons.
They work with anyone to get what they want.
