Full shoulder turn in the golf swing

    Hi guys,
I had a lesson last year from a pro as I wanted to get more distance with my drives. He advised me to turn my shoulders until my left shoulder went behind the ball. Can I ask the better golfers here if they all do this as standard and whether this is also critical with the irons? For example do the pro's just do a 3/4 swing for all their irons to ensure better control? Does a full turn just add distance or does it help eliminate faults such as coming over the top?
    Thanks in advance.

im no expert, but i think its because when you turn your back your arms can go higher and straighter behind you, so when you pivot to strike you get a smoother more fluid movement which self generates power on your down stroke which means you dont have to put extra momentum into hitting the ball, thus meaning you are less likely to scuff etc.

Seems to me to be more about power. Getting your shoulders (and hence your sternum) behind the ball in your backswing means you get more forward momentum in your follow through. Powerful golf swings generally do have some lateral movement (according to Leadbetter anyway!). This move will give you more power with the driver.

To really get more power though you've got to generate coil. If you can combine this full shoulder turn with a relatively static lower body (i.e. both your feet feel planted into the ground on the backswing), you'll get lots of coil. Your weight will be on the inside of your right foot and the outside of your right thigh. I started doing this a few weeks ago and am driving it much better.

I suppose it create's a greater swing arc which translates to more distance.
Watched McIlroy at the Irish Open on the range hitting the drver. Timed the air-time on each ball and it was
pretty much 8 seconds from impact to landing. Tried to get as much airtime at the range and found I needed to make a fully back swing to get more air-time.
