I've seen them available and they are dear, about €160.
I want one to go to the spare room but don't want to spend that kind of money if they don't work!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance :)

HDMI cables start to have problems once you go longer than 10 meters , its an attenuation problem and all HDMI cables are prone to it.

30 meters is way too long for a simple cable and will almost certainly have problems.

Usually , when your looking at those kind of distances , you would use HDMI Baluns , these use two by Cat5/6 lengths of cable to connect between transmitter and receiver to send the HDMI signal over the longer distance.

Examples are here , but you should shop around as prices vary wildly. You should be able to get a working set for well within the same budget as a 30 meter cable , which is unlikely to work.

we ran a 25m hdmi cable when a friend was building a games room in his garden.

This in turn went into an amplifier and then another 5 metre cable to a projector.

The 25m cable picture was distorted when we tested it with the projector but was fine when fed to the amplifier and then on another 5 metres to the projector.

Seemingly the amp boosts the signal before it sends it on, so if you are going through an amp then fine but if not you may run into problems.

We used http://ukhdmi.com/ and bought the cheapest we could, but they now seem to have limited the cables to 20m. So you will need to buy a hdmi extender and use 2 cables.

If you have the connections you should really use component cable for such a long run, sky only goes 720p or 1080i so picture will be just as good.

Does the picture quality get worse over that distance or is it still full hd,that is the same quality as on say the main tv thats fed off a 2 metre hdmi cable for example?

Picture or sound quality is never affected with HDMI , you cannot get better picture or sound with different cables, that is impossible.

With long cables the attenuation issue shows up with Sparklies ( digital drop-outs ) , massive picture or sound break up , or the most likely of all , it just wont work!

There is never any subtle de-grading of sound or picture.
Seemingly the amp boosts the signal before it sends it on, so if you are going through an amp then fine but if not you may run into problems.

All long cables will have the attenuation issue , this means the logic levels will be dangerously close to the fail limit. Some amps and equipment boost and equalise the signal , some do not , there is no guarantee that you equipment will work with any long cable whether its connected to an amp or not.

The cat5/6 solution will work and is much better than a long cable , which will be unreliable.

So the cat 5 converted to hdmi over 30 metres will deliver the same sky hd quality on the 2nd tv as it does via the short hdmi cable going direct from the sky box to the main tv? yes or no?

Also is it possible to split that sky hdmi feed to 3 tv's without loss of picture quality and if so how? That is deliver it with the same quality to 3 rooms with the same quality of hd that goes to the main tv now via the short run?

    Thanks :)

    Yes , absolutely identical.

Yes you can split it , this is best done with a quality switcher/distributor , not all HDMI switchers are the same. The switch must be able to handle the possible different resolutions on each screen and send each screen the correct signal type. Basically the switch needs good EDID handling.

Also , the switch must be powered , as passive switches that steal power from the HDMI interface itself are notoriously unreliable.
    This is a good one.
