Prepping alloys for NCT tomorrow - please help

    Hi there,
I have alloys on my RAV4 and I'm prepping for the NCT in the morning.
The website mentions how to prep hubcaps but not about what you do if you have alloys. There are little caps in the centres of the wheels - do I need to remove these and how?
    Thanks a million

You don't need to remove those. You should remove the plastic cover for the spare wheel on the back door though, paying particular attention to how its hooked in at the top for when you're refitting

That's great, thank you very much for your help!

I heard of someone failing on that, best take them off to be sure.

It's stupid really, as it's only a visual inspection since their tightness isn't checked. (Is it?!)

They have to be able to see the wheel nuts. If the caps cover the nuts they have to be taken off.

The caps don't cover the nuts and don't need to be removed.

It's not a case of removing them to be sure. The wheel needs to be removed to pop them off without scratching anyway

I am totally stupid, there is a cap on my alloys where the wheel nuts are, but how do I take them off???

Does the centre cap cover the nuts? What car is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,776 ✭✭✭youngblood

centre cap covers the nuts, passat

I've since been told that I should take off all the wheels?

Someone please tell me their having a laugh

Remove the caps on the passant to expose the nuts or studs , fail otherwise.

Question I asked above was how to remove them

    any help appreciated

There should be a small gap on the cover that you would fit a small flathead screwdriver in to to pop them off. In fact there should be a tool to do this stored alongside your jack.

Passat should have a little puller tool in the tyre kit for that job. Small metal thingy with a ring on one end and a hook on the other. Pops into a small hole in the wheel nut cover, and pull towards you.

You don't need to remove wheels

    Ps

Sometimes amazes me how people are fed the same 'you must do blahh' line on here without answering the actual question asked... just help people out if you can

I havent got the tool but will call into my mate with same alloys tomorrow
    to use theirs

Thought I might actually have to remove the wheels!

    Thanks again!

I think he meant does he have to take the wheels off to get the centre caps off (and then put the wheel back on again, minus the cap).

    Hope so! :D

no you dont have to take off the spare wheel cover. if there is a cover on it , we just check that the spare feels secure.

OP just make sure the wheel nuts can be seen, wheels dont have to be taken off, the hubcaps on the older puntos are held on by the nuts but they dont have to be removed. also clip in the seatbelts , that way you know they arent stuck down behind the seat.

If you have hubcaps that cover the wheelnuts then take off the hubcaps, if you have alloys(which are made from metal and have a tire around them btw) and you can see the nuts then dont touch them.

If the cap covers the nuts it has to pop off. It would be impossible to remove the wheel to remove the cap as you couldn't get at the nuts in the first place!!
