My buddies MBP got the folder / question mark icon on startup yesterday. Thought he had a dodgy hard drie so I replaceced it with a new 500 gig one. But it won't show up in disk utility at all. MBP will boot from external hard drive with snow leopard on it so I know the mac is ok. Anyone any ideas? have checked the connections on the cable from new sata to mac an it too seems to be ok.

I don't really understand the last bit, so this may be what you've already tried.
    Dodgy SATA cable?
Otherwise, are you sure the hard drive is formatted for mac?

    Yep that's what i mean!
I should be able to format the hard drive in Disk utility, Shouldn't I? It's brand new.

You should. Have you got a caddy and another mac? If so, try formatting it on that, and put it back into the machine.

is your mac a unibody? if so it's likely a dodgy sata cable will need to take it to a repair centre
