Asking this one for a friend.

What rifles are made in semi auto or left hand bolt action (without having to go through loads of hassle) in 17hmr?

    thanks

CZ 452 American is the first to come to mind. Also Anschutz 1517. Both excellent choices.

Asked about CZ and was told left hand would have to be made to order and could take months...

Arent Anschutz top class rifles..? I probably should have said, but Id think the budget is about 600-700... Id say that means Anschutz is off the list.

The first part is bollocks. They're a production item and any RFD who told you that doesn't want the sale enough to get off his hole and order one in, so go to someone else.

Anschutz are nice alright but you might well find a second hand 1517 within your budget. Worth a look anyway, but for my money, the CZ is the way to go. Expect to pay a bit more for the left handed version, somewhere between 450 and 500 roughly. Great rifles though.

    Thats nice to know :)

So thats bolt action covered. What about semi-auto..?? Is there anything available in that department..?? :)

    Thanks

No idea to be honest. Personally I like the CZ a lot, would definitely be my choice.

Remington 597 was with drawn due to problems
    Never saw a Ruger 10/17

    So that leaves???? Volquartsen

Think this sums it up -

Major ammunition manufacturers have issued safety notices concerning the use of .17 HMR ammunition in semi-auto firearms. According to the manufacturers, firing .17 HMR ammo in semi-auto firearms could result in property damage or serious personal injury and should be immediately discontinued.

CCI, Federal, Hornady, Remington and Winchester have all issued statements warning consumers not to use .17 HMR ammunition in semi-auto firearms until contacting the manufacturer to determine if the specific type of firearm is safe to handle .17 HMR ammunition.

Press releases concerning the safety notices state: "17 HMR ammunition is manufactured in accordance with standards issued by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI). Subsequent to the design and introduction of 17 HMR ammunition in the market, 17 HMR semi-automatic firearms were introduced by various firearm manufacturers. Those firearms have proven to be incompatible with 17 HMR ammunition. 17 HMR ammunition is suitable for use in quality firearms in good condition that are not semi-automatic."

Remington has issued a recall of its .17 HMR ammunition, as well as its Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifle as there is no safe .17 HMR ammunition available for the rifle.

Remington is providing free shipping to return Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifles to Remington along with coupons to replace the rifle with another Remington firearm. Consumers will receive a $200 coupon for synthetic stock Model 597 rifles, and a $250 coupon for laminate stock Model 597 rifles.

Remington is also providing $10 coupons to purchase Remington ammunition for every 50 round box of Remington .17 HMR ammunition returned to Remington.

For instructions on returning a Remington Model 597 .17 HMR semi-auto rifle or .17 HMR ammunition, contact the Remington Consumer Service Department at (800) 243-9700, prompt No. 3.

On the bonus side, there are MANY .22WMR guns out there...

henry lever action in 17hmr is a fun little gun it can be shot by right or left handers.

Guess semi auto is out then. And I doubt Anschutz is in the budget. Id say the lever action henry is out just for the fact its lever action (Ive never seen a lever action in any RFDs.....ever). So back to the CZ.

Anybody know any RFD's that would get a CZ bolt action, left hand in 17 hmr with no messing? And how much notice would he need to give for ordering?

Wouldn't a 17 hmr be a restricted firearm anyway ? Not that it matters if its what you want.

It's not advisable to use a semi auto in .17 HMR as the bullit manafacturers don't recomend their use becaus of civil actions,Alexander Arm's have just brought out a model in that caliber.

Spoke with Paul O'Halloran in Drangan about it before when I had a few quid I was planning to spend on a bunny gun before it disappeared into the bottomless money pit. He reckoned it'd be about five hundred but had no problem ordering one. Nice guy, got back to me quickly with details, no hassle recommending him.

The cartridges were loaded to a higher pressure than they expected. Not sure what actually happened when it was fired.

There doesnt seem to be a definitive answer but they seem worry about the power of the blow back in some cases knocking off the next round and the issues of cases bursting do a google on it and you will see all.

They had a lot of problems with cases blowing up, most of the time it was the rim but occasionally the whole case splits. They reconed that the bore on a .17 caliber is just too small for gases to vent properly on a blow-back type of action.

Patrick Carley is your man. He deals in cz and is pretty straight and honest about waiting times etc. I bought a cz 455 varmint off him recently and found him excellent. Hope this helps.
