I need some advice...

Im due back to college in september but first I have to repeat some exams first, which i need to pass to enter second year. Thing is im not entirely sure if I want to go back.
I have a small speech problem which has made me very shy and life was good until I went to college. I struggled to make any friends as my fear of embarrassing myself had made me almost chronically shy. I didnt put myself out there and now everybody has their group of friends and I have nobody. My course involves lots of group work and public speaking ( which in hindsight was a dreadful decision to make on my cao).
The thing is when im at home in my own town I am quite popular and well liked but when it comes to putting myself out their with college classmates I just cant do it. The people in my class are sound but I just dont feel like part of the group.
There's also a girl in my class who I really like but I havnt had the nerve to speak to her yet. She's beautiful and funny and from a posh part of Dublin wheras Im from the countryside and socially handicapped.
I would really appreciate some advice about whether I should go and work hard and pass my exams or intentionally fail so I can repeat first year so I can have a fresh start. And secondly has anybody had a similar social incapability and been able to overcome it? Thanks

OP, please use this forum or perhaps Personal Issues under Soc.
