How long should a speeding fine/penalty points notice take?

    Hi all,

I got caught speeding (popped my penalty-point cherry) on 12 July, and was awarded an €80 fine plus two points on my license.

It's been over a month now though and I still haven't received any notice. Fine by me if they've mislaid the paperwork or forgotten about my bad behaviour, but I'm eager to get the bloody thing paid so that it's not doubled!

How long does it usually take for such notices to be issued? Has it ever happened one of you that the first notice fails to arrive, and then you get a court summons out of the blue?

Depends. He's got 6 months though so you're not out of the woods yet sonny Jim. Generally its a few weeks.

dI assume you were pulled over and stopped as opposed to gatso... I got one a while back and it took about 10 days from the time I passed the van.

Took over 3 months for mine to arrive, caught late September, arrived in post in January.
And they were on the license for 3 years from January not September.:(

Took two weeks when I got pulled over. Granted, it went to the wrong address but that's because I hadn't changed the address on my licence. But still, it was two weeks after I was stopped.
And they were on the license for 3 years from January not September.
The points are applied from the date that payment is received for the fine. Another reason to pay up quicker!

Are you sure about that ?

I think you might be incorrect. Points are usually applied one month after the process is completed.

    Just checked actually

If you have committed a driving offence that incurs penalty points you will receive a written notification informing you that points are being added to your driving licence. This notice will include details of your name, address, date time and location of the driving offence concerned. It will also confirm that you either paid the fixed charge for the offence or were convicted in the court of such offence.
The notice will also contain a date on which the notice was issued to you. This is the important date as the points will only be added to your licence 28 days after this date.

Ah. That's assuming of course that you pay within 28 days ;)

I was going on the actual legislation which states that the points are applied after the fine has been paid, but it doesn't state exactly how long after the fine has been paid, so obviously they've decided to implement it as above.

Yes, the Garda said it was going to be an €80 fine plus two penalty points.

They do this so you cannot unknowingly drive while disqualified. If they applied the points from the date of the offence and it was a speed camera or whatever that got you, if you had ten points at the time, you'd then be on 12 and driving illegally.

sorry to bump an old thread but I Just got pulled over for the 1st time for speeding he took my details and had a look at my license and sent me on my way would he have fined me/given penalty points then or do i get the at a later date?

Let's hope it doesn't take as long as when this thread was started. :)

I think they can be issued upto 6 months after the offense but I'm open to correction on that.

i just was reading that if they dont mention fine or points or give you a ticket then i might get away with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Hard to tell really. Normally they would read you the riot act if they were letting you off and on your way. I'd imagine you will get them in the post in the next few weeks if they were going to be issued. Either way there is nothing you can really do about it so it's not worth worrying yourself about.
