What was the scheme for numbering U-boats in WW1 and WW2 ?

Were numbers assigned to U-boats in WW1 reused on U-boats in WW2 ?

Put another way could two different U-boats have been assigned the same number over time ?

Not sure about the answer to that one OP, but you might enjoy browsing this site.

    thats interesting Marc
The Uboats numbers are a bit more sequential than the Panzers.

as to the OP's question from the looks of it only the first 167 Uboats shared designations U***

most of the WW1 boats were designated UB*** UC*** kuk U***

    Thanks.

I see what has confused me.

    Thanks for that.

I see the point now. I didn't fully appreciate that the WW1 boats had additional prefixes in the numbers as distinct from the straight U number of WW2 boats.
