Argos UK - iPad PAYG Mobile Broadband Micro SIM

I see here that you can get a 1GB PAYG micro-sim valid for 30 days on Argos UK for £4.99. They also have a 3GB for 90 days for £20.

Would these be of any use if on holiday in the UK and want to avoid roaming charges?

iPads are not locked to a network so this looks like a great way to make sure you don't get caught for roaming charges. Good spot, will keep the tip in mind myself. The other option is to turn off roaming in your settings.

The cheaper sim is better value. Just get 3 of them and it gives you 3gb over 90 days and you can take a break if you are not using them concurrently.

I must get a couple of these as I will be in the uk occasionally over the next 2 years

Why would you bother? Just get a 3IRL SIM and use it in the UK.
