You'll probably get a fine of about €2000, community service and a slap of the wooden spoon from your mum.
Driving through red lights can get you or someone else killed. There's a reason your not allowed drive on your own yet.

To answer your question though, you won't know if your getting fined until a letter comes for the registered owner of the car, i.e your mum.

If it makes you feel any better I done it twice in a row last week, once was a genuine mistake and the second one was while someone was giving out to me in the car for running the first red light. Can happen the best of us.

thats just a sensor to let the lights know when traffic is building up, you need to be more carful in future and dont take your mums car without permission let this be a lesson to you

i dont think there are any red light cameras in operation yet in Ireland.

It sounds to me as if you have learnt from the error, get that test done.

I was focusing too much on my lanes there is about 4 sets of traffic lights on that 100m stretch i'm such an idiot

Wouldn't worry about it, it's not a camera.

and thats exactly why you need a full licence driver with you and permission to use the car you could have killed someone

Exactly, did you not think of the children when you got behind the wheel?

I thought the lights east bound on Island Bridge in Dublin had cameras for catching red light breakers!

Expect homeland security at your mums house within the next 6 hours.

    You'll be looking at 10 - 15 for this.

I am a safe driver guys ..would probably have passed the test but i've only just got a date that suited and its coming up soon( had to wait a year i just failed by 3 pts the first time ).
I am not some reckless boy racer it was an honest mistake I started crying when I realised I ran it

Can anyone here say they have never made a mistake? Leave the poor kid alone, lesson learned - there are people with full licenses out there that do much stupider things in cars!

That is a fair comment but the crying bit was a bit excessive OP!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

OP, be more alert the next time and get your driving priorities right; If you are in the wrong lane nobody gets hurt and you can turn around or adjust your driving route accordingly whereas if you run a red light there is a chance of serious injury. Don't go out without a fully licensed driver in future, you're clearly lacking some skills necessary to drive on your own. Everything takes time :)

All that aside, that thing atop the red light is just a traffic sensor monitoring how heavy traffic is so it can adjust the length of the green light.

Re: Islandbridge, that gatso-type thing on the map has since been replaced by a newer, taller camera but yes, I'm pretty sure it's a red light camera only as friends of mine have gone past it considerably faster than the 50kph limit and never gotten a ticket.

    I am a safe driver guys ...........

    Oh no you're not!

I hope you learn from your mistake. First step is to accept it is illegal, and dangerous, for you to drive unaccompanied. Do not drive unaccompanied until you are certified fit to drive alone.

yes I am..you have not seen me drive so you have no idea. I made one mistake that i know was stupid. You don't know that stretch of road the lights on it were not even working properly earlier that morning so imagine what accidents could have been caused then..I was focusing on the road and there were not cars around at the time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I have to laugh at you lot. We've all made mistakes, I challenge anybody to come on here and say they've not made a mistake while driving

OP That camera is most likely a sensor for traffic. You should learn from this and be more careful in future though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭Muckie

Live and learn OP. Been driving years and i've done it myself, distracted and not paying attention, crashed a few times also, older and wiser now (i think).

So put it down to experience and move on good luck with your driving test too when it comes up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,012 ✭✭✭Plazaman

.....it was an honest mistake I started crying when I realised I ran it

Crying whilst driving is a highly dangerous activity as it diminishes your visual accuity and if the salt and bitterness from your tears get onto the steering wheel it could disolve right in front of you and then where would you be driving illegally with no steering wheel?

    You made three mistakes:

    - Taking the car without your mum's permission
    - You were unable to control your vehicle you either ran it on purpose, or you were driving too fast to bring it too a safe stop in time for the lights.
    - If you'd know the lights were not working properly earlier in the day then you should have approached them with caution.

You were lucky you didn't kill someone today, you should grow up and realise that life does not start or end with whether you will get in trouble with your Mammy and that there could have been more serious consequences from your actions. If you were focusing on the road you would have been able to stop your car in time.

There is a reason why running a red light is an automatic fail in a driving test.

You're going down OP. Downtown to China town. It's not a camera though. It's just put there by motors boardsies to scare red light breaking learners who drive unaccompanied.

I'll give you a hint here, trying to justify it by claiming the junction is bad isn't going to win you much support, you need to be able to stop at every single red light, not just the ones on easy junctions. Trying to justify it is just telling everyone that you're really not ready to be driving alone.

You're much better off just accepting the mistake and learning to never do it again, no matter what junctions you are at. And also learn to be aware of absolutely everything happening around you, if you focus too much on one thing, you will be completely caught out by something else.

It's a shocking mistake to make, and I'll be honest here, I've done it twice, once not long after I'd started driving and again after I'd been driving 5/6 years. I'm still shocked/embarrassed that I did it, and tbh the only response that I think is appropriate is to beat yourself over the head with it until you're sure you won't do it again.

I ran a red light by accident and pulled in to the side of the road (I indicated of course) put on my hazard lights and punched myself in the jaw till I passed out. I never did it again.

    +1

OP - you need to admit that all 3 items above were wrong. You should not have been driving the car.

Aside from that, ditch the justification in relation to the junction being "hard", because lots of junctions are hard.

And then remember how you feel at the moment (and imagine how you would feel if you'd run over someone), and count yourself lucky.

If you learn from the above 3 mistakes, then at least something good has come out of it.

But you won't learn if you try to justify yourself by saying that the junction is difficult.

I ran a red light today by accident can any one tell me if this image is of a red light checker on top of the traffic lights.
Thing is i'm only a learner and i was driving my mum's car without her and she doesn't know and will kill me

I know the junction very well, theres no camera as you mention. dont worry.

Which way were you going? towards dunnes or down the cutlery road or towards ryston?

Hardly the end of the world in any case, theres not 4 lanes there though. The lights change quite quickly there at times and red lights are often badly broken by people there.

Besides, every one goes through the odd 'amber' light at some point or another but its bad practise because of what the warriors have been pointing out to you eg someone crossing the road etc..

There was no need for the slating you are after getting, for a thread in the motoring forum there's a lot of high horses running around

Either way, just take more care next time, keep an eye on whats going on around you, when you approach a junction and you see the light has been green for some time: slow down, it's probably going to go red soon. the 30 second wait wont kill you, also when you're stopped you might get to glance at an attractive boy/girl strolling to the whitewater :pac:

Lesson learned OP. Everyone posting in this thread has done similar or worse. The important thing is that you know a mistake was made, you will learn from it, and know that, Learner Permit holder or not, you never stop learning.

I'm going to close this now. OP send me a PM if you want it re-opened.

    Closed.
