A strange divorce question

I'm not looking for legal advice here, I just heard something recently and it made me curious and I can't find an answer online.

I know someone who was married in Ireland but was recently divorced in the Uk by his wife without his knowledge. No papers were served, nothing was signed, no agreement on division of assets etc. He found out that it had happened completely incidentally via a third party.

Is this normal? Can it be done and be legal and binding within Ireland if the marriage took place here?
I would have thought that disillusionment of a marriage would at the very least require both parties be aware of it happening if at all possible.

If she prooved that she made reasonable efforts i.e. registered letters or irish newspaper adds. to contact him without success she may have been granted a divorce.
I had a family member who did this but the juristrictions were reverst.

Thank you aujopimur. Thats interesting I wouldn't have thought it was possible. In the instance I mention I know the person was not contacted at all although his wife was certainly aware of his location and address. It seemed very strange to me.:)
