I was considering putting a more powerful scope on my .223 for Lamping Foxes and was wondering what are peoples opinions on the cheaper scopes form Asia like the Hawke Sidewinder, Nikko Stirling Nighteater, Simmons, MTC, Tasco etc...

How do they compare with the more upmarket scopes and does anyone have any recommendations?

I have a hawke on my Hornet and no hassel, a mate of mine has a hawke on his 223 and no issue.

I have a nikko stearling Mountmaster 4-12x50 AO on my hmr and use it lamping all the time, i find it excelent for the money i paid for it. Was shooting rabbits one night at about 11 pm using just the light off the moon, was a very bright night but i was still impressed. iv shot foxes out to 120 or so at night with my p7 and under a big bright lamp have no problem clearly seeing anything i look at.

Clivej has a nighteater on his .22 semi so might be able to tell you more about that.

Could you specify what types of scopes you are using so that I could look them up, please?

I was thinking of getting something with up to 20X magnification for the .223, I'm using a Simmons Whitetail Classic 3.5 - 10 X 44 at the moment its very good in low light but could do with a bit more mag for longer ranges out past 100m.

Well I'ld like to get a new scope but I don't want to have to take out a loan to get something decent.

It would be nice to know what other options there are out there and what other people are using.

Have a look at this guy JR Ramsbottom http://www.jsramsbottom.com/

he has leapers and a few others. Same here I might stick with a Nikko Stirling Mount Master but in a 3-9 x 44 or similiar. I need mil dot for the 22 lr, since I started to use it its dinger

    Well here goes................

First scope was a Nikko nighteater 8-32x60 on the 22lr (OTT)
Son got a Nikko nighteater 6-24x56 on his 223. Both mildot reticle, Both sold on after.

Not great in low light but they will do the job. Once I had seen through the Bushnell banner I could see how bad the Nikko are in low light.

Replaced both these with Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 (multi recticle) on the 22lr and Legend 6-15x40 on 223. and then swopped them around and they worked just as good.

I'm using 2 Bushnell 4200 elites 6-24x50 on both the 223 and 308. Super scopes. Mildot reticle target turrets
I had a Bushnell 3200 elite 10x40 mildot target turrets on the CZ 22lr now sitting on the shelf.

Got a Nikko nighteater 6-24x56 for my Ruger 10/22 secondhand but it was shot out and only has 1 turn each way on the turrets. Now on the shelf.

The Ruger now has the Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 on top and it is very good for the shooting I'm doing 'cos it will focus down to 10y

I like the Bushnell scopes good for the money, there are 5 Bushnell scopes between the son and I

Nikko you will do better IMO.

Remember the bigger the objective lens is the more light gets through and you will see a better picture, The bigger the tube the more turns on the turrets you get.
