Changing rear wheel bearing

    Evening all.

I've a 06 1.9 Octavia, an have a sneaking suspicion the n/s rear wheel bearing's gone. She's developing a hum, that gets progressively worse the higher the speed. Starts to get noticeable about 60kph, but severely annoying at motorway speeds.

Question is, should I tackle this myself or leave it in? I'm fairly mechanically adept, and would have confidence doing it, and would obviously be saving shillings by doing so.

Next question: any major equipment, apart from the usual required? And where might I find the torque settings for the retaining bolt?

    Cheers. All advice appreciated.

If it is the same as the MK4 Golf it is handy enough.

Hub and bearing all comes in the one piece. Only awkward bit was when I was doing mine it left the inner race behind on the stub axle. I had to cut it off.

Other than that it straight forward. Had it done and dusted in my lunch hour

They are fairly simple if your handy at doing it yourself, The bearing comes as a complete hub so you just have to remove the hub nut, caliper and disk and the bub/bearing should just slide off.

    Thanks Doc.

That's what I was thinking alright. Can't imagine the bearing would be too pricey. But methinks labour could be!!!

The complete hubs are a fair bit more expensive the a standard wheel bearing thats has to be pressed in but still not crazy money, in the region of €100 retail I think..

I was kinda thinking round that sorta money alright. And was kinda thinking €150- €200 for labour. Hence the thoughts on doing it myself.

An hour labour tops I would say.

Well if any garage tried to charge that money to fit one of these then I don't blame you doing it yourself.

I shouldn't take any decent mechanic more then half an hour.

Rear Hub bolt possibly requires a m18 spline bit, the fitting torque is 180nm + 180 degs which requires a 3/4 breaker bar imo.

dont think this is one for diy...

Ok, just before I go and order the bearing (€110), plus €50 for fitting thought I'd try to be sure the bearing was gone.

Jacked the car up, but couldn't feel much/ any play in the wheel.

Took the wheel of, but could still feel no play in the hub. But when I rotated the hub by turning the disk, I could hear a grinding noise.

This sound like a likely symptom of a knackered bearing?

The bearing would have to be very bad for it to be grinding.

You sure the pads are ok?

If you put the wheel back on and spin it as fast as you can you should hear a rumble more than a grinding noise to indicate a failing wheel bearing

Reason I took the wheel of was, because when I was spinning the wheel it kinda sounded as though the disk was warped slightly, and the pads were rubbing off it. But only intermittently. Hence the thought on the warped disk.

It's hard to describe the noise. I think if it is the bearing, it's been going for a while. Noise appeared just before I changed wheels & tyres a while ago, and hadn't been on a motorway til last Saturday.

And the hum/ rumble noise at speed has me thinking bearing.

Must add that there's no juddering/ vibration under breaking, so don't think disk is warped.

If you take off the caliper and give it a spin, and it still makes the noise, there's not much left apart from the bearing that it could be.

Thanks man. I'm 99.99% sure it's the bearing alright.

Rang mechanic, and he's trying for 1.5 hours labour to fit it. Was trying to tell him it's a whole hub bearing, and nothing needs pressing, bit I don't think he was listening.

Just back from Nissan Doctor. New bearing installed, and four wheel alignment done.

Car's driving like new. Thanks Doc.

I have a humming noise around 40-50mph in the rear of a nissan micra, would this be a breaing dying as well ????? i would have thought it would get worse at speed, but its only noticable at around 40-50 at constant speeds.......

If the bearing is in the early stages of failing the humming may not be audible at higher speeds as road noise and wind noise etc takes over.

If its really loud at motorway speeds then its in a really bad way.

no the humming pretty much stops at 50 + then rear appears as i deaccelerate, i dont think the wind takes over....

anyways booked it into the local garage for monday, will report back
