Canavan looks good in red and white, not sure Gooch would;)

    Both if possible:)

You can't put men up against Giants tbh, I can't imagine Gooch in a red and white jersey even though our rebel neighbours would have a secret dastardly wish for him to join their team. :p

I presume you think Canavan is only a man compared to the giant Cooper:rolleyes:

although, with our injuries this year we could have done with him;)

pointless discussion as both were /are quite brilliant and cases will be made for both men should we not just be happy we have the chance to enjoy them

Depends on the rest of your line up and who would be a better fit as they are stylistically fairly different players.

It would be very close either and anyone suggesting that there's a clear answer on this one is essentially admitting to being a straight up drooler.

Without putting an enormous amount of thought into it I'd maybe drift towards Canavan.

Peter in one corner Colm in the other,
But Peter would be first on the team sheet cause he took tyrone to an all ireland on his own.

As Corkman I think they are both super players..The Gooch is class act...

I think Canavan was type of player we could done with to win AI before we did.

Honestly its tough call..I think we should just admire two outstanding players

I can understand Tyrone and Kerry people picking their own man, but I think be unfair to say one was much better then the other

    Could we have both;)

canavan came with a whisker of winning an all-ireland title on his own in 1995

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,791 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

He certainly didn't win one on his own in 2003, he played about 20 minutes of the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭aidan24326

If you compare both at their very best, it's a tough one but if I was the manager picking the team and was in the fortunate (some might say impossible) situation of having a team so good that only one of them could get in it, I'd probably plump for Canavan.

Cooper and Canavan in the corners with a younger Padraig Joyce at 14 would be my dream full forward line.

he played the entire first half and came back on with about 10 minutes to play in that match, finishing top scorer on the day with 5 points

he scored 51 points in total that championship season so without him they wouldn't have been contesting any all-ireland final

I'm not sure which, but I'd have both on my all time football XV.

Gifted but not as good as Peter Canavan. Didn't do it consistently enough for me.

Canavan for me. Gooch is a great player but I think Canavan had more finesse about him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 153 ✭✭I dont know

Has to be Wee Peter for me.
An absolute genius who dragged a team to an All-Ireland final in 1995 ( a team that would inspire a generation of youngsters that he would later win 2 All-Irelands with) scoring 11 points in the final and still ending up n the losing team! Love the way he stuck at it until he got his celtic cross
Also, the whole underage story. He didn’t play competitive underage club football. It ended up being his talent that helped bring together his parish

Cooper is pure class - but just a bit behind PTG.
    Although, I'm from Tyrone:)

    Gooch.

The amount of times that man has made the whole crowd stand up, smile and applaud a score is incredible. He makes many games worth the entry fee in himself. Granted he can kick wides and have off days, but who doesn't.

The league game vs Galway this year in Fitzgerald Stadium, Cooper gave a master class! 8/9 points. Left foot, Right foot. Long range, Tight angles. There was no Sunday game coverage, no camera's, bar Dr. Crokes' own camera. It was bitterly cold, but for 70 mins Gooch warmed the crowd up. Thats why i'd have Cooper. He's in a league of his own.

Very tough to call - made even tougher by the fact that we may not have even seen Cooper at his best yet, he still has a good few years left in him.

Canavan was amazing and one of my childhood heroes, a natural scorer, deadly really but I think Cooper has that in his arsenal in addition to being a playmaker.

It's hard not to be biased as a Kerryman and I'll prob get flack for it but I'd lean ever so slightly towards Cooper on the assumption that he'll continue to get better in the coming years.

The Fact that Gooch is only 28 and still has 6 years left in him and it is up in the air at this stage says it all.

Gooch will retire as one of the greatest and most sucessful players ever to play the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,420 ✭✭✭Dionysus

Canavan, in my view, has been the most brilliant forward of the game in my life so far. I cannot think of anybody to equal him, and certainly not Cooper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭pipelaser

Have seen both play at their respective peaks, Canavan was streets ahead of everyone!

A more fitting comparison would be Maurice Fitzgerald/Canavan
    Or Joyce/Cooper
