Hi, I have had my dell vostro 1000 for about 3 years now. Due to my brother putting endless amounts of useless games and other stuff on it, it has become quite slow. Another issue with it is that the battery has died on it because i bought a charger from ebay which for some reason did not charge the laptop but only allowed it work through the mains. I presume all i would need to do to repair the battery would be by a new charger and battery but is it possible to wipe the computer clean and start it over as if to get it for the first time again with one of the cd's that get given to you with the laptop? I am going to college for my final year so i wanted to give it a fresh start. Or is there software which comes with the dell laptop that I do not have access to?? any advice or help would be greatly appreciated,

    thanks,

    S

It's possible that the laptop came with a re-installation or "recovery" disc. I suggest you backup any important files and then do a complete re-install from the disc!

Best thing you could do is take it to an IT Technician. I'd suggest to remove/uninstall the games off it they take up too much memory and slow down the laptop. It's the speed of the processor and RAM will determine how quick the laptop will operate and the version of the processor. Things will slow it down if there is too much software/files on it. I would definitely try to wipe it clean/reformat it and start again by clearing up the system but just get rid of the software and files that aren't necessary.

There should be general installation CD's with the Dell laptop, its three years old so shouldn't be too much hassle to get the hard-drive cleaned up and deleting unwanted files and unnecessary junk and software rarely used just keep the essentials like Microsoft software and internet browser and what ever other application you'd need for college. Buy a new charger and battery that are compatible with the laptop, charger and battery have to be compatible for them to work and they both have to be compatibleness with the laptop to work! If you look up the model of your laptop online or the old manual/instruction leaflet/docket invoice you should get the details of the battery and charger so you get the right ones! I say you could download the necessary installations for your dell computer though depends what you are looking for. It's best to start from scratch and start afresh when you go back to college, you will have less headaches to deal with! If it's too slow that's a headache in itself and if the internet is slow, the laptop can slow down the net too not just the broadband itself! Don't forget to back up your files.

I have a dell laptop four years old, its slow anyway but was a vista and upgraded to windows 7, a little quicker but I actually didn't have much on it, not many files and not that much software but was still slow think it was the incompatibilities of vista to be honest and tended to save things on memory sticks rather than the hard drive as there wasn't enough memory on the drive to be honest. My netbook has a way more memory and it happens not too be that slow despite the load of files I have saved on it mostly college stuff but mostly saved on memory sticks! I haven't much software on it though.

Hope it goes ok for you OP! Best thing for you to do is to take it to a techy they will sort it out for you no problem! Just ask them what you need done and they get it done for you in a few days without you having to worry about it! They might find something wrong with it and might not be much use to you and you might need a new laptop but what they might do is update/upgrade or add in a new drive!
