Intermitten problem with iPhone 4 home button

    Hi,

I've noticed that my iPhone 4 home button is starting to act up a bit, albeit only sometimes. It doesn't register presses and will sometimes register one click as a double click and bring up the multitasking bar. Sometimes it works perfectly.

Anyway, my problem is that we had an intermittent problem on an iPod in the past and having sent it away having done all of the various steps that Apple advised, they sent it back twice saying the fault couldn't be replicated so they weren't doing anything. Then the warranty ran out and they didn't want to know. So I'm a bit concerned that I could send my phone away for a week and have it sent back to me in the same condition because it worked the three or four times they pressed it. I'm wondering would I be better off bringing it to the Apple store in Belfast?

Has anyone else had to bring a phone to the Belfast store due to a problem with the home button? Do they have any way of testing it for faults other than simply pressing it and seeing if it works? As I'm just as concerned that I could travel to Belfast and not have the problem with the button show up while I'm there.

    Thanks in advance.

Apple will cover this fault under warranty. They will send you a refurbished unit via courier. These units are in excellent condition.

When you register the fault online they will tell you if they will replace it before you send it away.

Really? I didn't know that. I might give that a go now so.

    Thanks.

Yes. Same thing happened with mine. Excellent service.

I suspect the next version of the iPhone will have a modified home button as many iPhone 4s seem to be returned due this fault.

JD, at what point should I see the message that they will be replacing the phone? I have gotten to the warning that if my phone was water damaged etc. No mention that my phone will be replaced yet.

The same problem has just presented itself in my phone this week. The only problem is I'm outside of my warranty now by two weeks. Any chance Apple would deal with me?

No harm in trying. Go with the 'I'll never buy an Apple product again/I noticed the problem over two weeks ago' routine and see where it brings you.
