***THREAD CLOSES 16th OCTOBER*** Bands and Musicians Charter Update 2011 Discussion

The current charter has been in place since January 2006 and, barring a couple of additions, has remained pretty much the same since then. Given certain recent events and just the passage of time in general it's probably no harm that a new charter gets drafted up.

Given that it's the users that make the forum we would like user input into what should or shouldn't go into the new charter. I don't think there will be wholesale changes since the existing charter pretty well covers things but maybe there are things that could/should be clarified.

One thing I'm definitely going to add is a "How to embed YouTube" videos as it's a question I'm asked quite a lot :).

So, over to the rest of you!

I'm thinking (personally, not as a moderator) that I'd like to see a set guide for musician/band wanted ads. It's already a suggestion, but I'd like to see it added formerly into the charter.
If anyone then notices an ad that doesn't keep with the set guide, report it, we'll lock it until it's been edited to include the info.

That could be a lot of work but we can definitely try it for a while and see how things go.

I wouldn't mind seeing a heading on threads stating whether it's for a covers band or original. Something akin to

[Covers band - Bass Wanted - Dublin]
Although, I'm not overly bothered about the headings :)
There seems to be a lot of cover bands / people for hire ads these days.

Also, it's not allowed in the charter at the moment, but this would pretty much be the only forum I look at and know some of the regulars, so If I, or they were playing a gig (especially if it's a band formed through boards) I'd like to see them advertising their gig on the forum. Maybe even just a post saying, "hey we're playing this weekend" and then a link to the gigs section. It might foster a bit of community on the board.

Some discussions pop up, mostly about band mechanics which I like and would like to see more of. I kind of think that the forum is seen as a place to just post musicians wanted/available ads, but is it?

I agree with the above suggestion

Having a title that would include things like area, specific gender/age wanted, and GENRE(!!!!) would be great... for example

    [Wanted-Singer-female 25-Cork-Indie]
    or
    [Available-Guitarist-Male 40-Any genre]

in the title of the thread would get so much more responses than trawling through about 10 every day or 40 every few days, yano?

    Might make things easier :)

Other than that, think the system is working well and the mods do trojan work getting rid of spammers and stuff.

The idea from the second post that we starting enforcing the template here should help with a lot of that. We have asked the admins already about adding thread prefixes for locations but that hasn't been done yet. When that's gets done it'll also help.

Well those kind of threads do dominate but the trick is finding discussion threads that fit here that somehow don't fit in Music Production, Band Promotion, Playing Techniques or Instruments :).

I'm not a big fan of "bumping" on this forum and would like to clarify the rule

    To:
NO EXCESSIVE BUMPING OF THREADS. Wait 3 days before bumping a thread, if you bump your thread more often than that you'll get a temp (3 day) banning.

That bumping clarification is fine with me anyway.

As a follow-on from that should multiple similar threads be allowed? There have been a few cases where, for example a band needs a singer, guitarist and drummer and a user has created three separate threads and would, naturally enough, bump them all at the same time. While it doesn't bother me, maybe it's something that bothers others?

For consistency with the other parts of the site should we treat e-mail addresses the same as phone numbers? See this thread for example.

The reason we kept phone numbers out was waaaay back in 07/08 there were reports of prank phone calls and people were posting up other peoples numbers, so we banned them. I'm happy with email addresses being still allowed. It's not a site-wide policy and is up to the mods of individual fora.
You can attach a soundcloud file or MP3 in an email, something which we can't do through pm's.
If we were to ban email addresses all we are doing is making another step for a poster to take imo. ie; pm them an email address that they may or may not get a response from

I thought I'd responded to the previous post. Wierd! Anyway, that's fine, I just thought I'd bring it up because you can see in some threads that get moved here the e-mail addresses are snipped out whereas we leave them alone.

Something else I'd like to see addressed is wedding bands. Threads like this one have no doubt been repeated and could be taken care of by either having a directory of wedding bands or moving the threads to the Wedding forum.

What really bugs me for some reason is people recommending bands to other people that they are a member of, while pretending not to be. A quick look at the post history of those recommending great bands "they saw" in Malice's link would reveal that JackBoo has at least been in contact with that band to try out for vocals in February 2010 and Paradiddle seems to run into the same band wherever he goes, not too surprising though as he plays drums for them.

These people should not only be banned from the internet in its entirety, but hunted down and given a severe talking to :)

Just to bump this as you only have a week for your input. This thread will close Sunday 16th, roundabout midnight.

New charter will be out shortly* after

    *Shortly is a relative term

I already had to write one charter this week so it's your turn next :p.

Another question I've got is in relation to threads that are just bands looking for gigs e.g. this. Should we be allowing them here or should we be moving them to Band Promotion?

I have no problem with those threads. To be honest, they're few and far between. In fact, I'd like more. It might give a greater sense of community if you could go to one thread and see who's available for gigs at short notice. It always happens that a band pulls out and you're ringing around mates etc. A mega thread (left to the members to update regularly) could be a useful tool for the industry (eventually, if it catches on).
I have some time free next Monday, so I'll do a first draft for you to look over.

Requiring at least the location would save a lot of wasted time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,514 ✭✭✭raindog.promo

It keeps coming up more and more, so I'd suggest a single thread for posting in if someone's looking for wedding/cover band/paid work.

Or the other way, a single thread for original bands.

Having the 2 together is bloody frustrating.

Would enforcing a 'Paid work-bassist-cork-wanted' headline work?
I'm actually not a fan as I think it takes away from the creativity people can put into their titles.
I can't see an easy answer. We requested location tags, yet we're still waiting.
