    Petrol or diesel?

Common problems to both - check all electrics work as they can be iffy. Make sure there are no warning lights or messages on the dashboard screen. Common warning message is with "Anti-Skid Service Urgent" which more than likely means the ABS/Traction Control unit is goosed and needs to be replaced at a cost of around €900.

Altenators are known to give trouble on the petrol models. Suspension is a weak point also. I had to replace both front wishbones on my old S40. Diesel models have DPFs and they can need replacing from around 80k miles onwards. A new one cost me €1k.

1.6/1.8 litre petrol engines are mostly straight out of the Ford Focus/Mondeo and diesels are made by Peugeot/Citroen. Make sure you go for the SE or SE LUX models as these will have the most toys. One with the optional Winter Pack would be a bonus. That would include heated seats and bi-xenon headlights with washers. Basic S model is bare and are very difficult to sell on.
