What to wear to graduation?

So I'm graduating at the start of next month, and don't really know what to wear to it.
We were told to wear something 'smart'. So I'm guessing that means that I really should wear a dress or a skirt.
What style of dresses/skirts are usually worn to graduations? I don't want to go too casual, but I definitely don't want to go overdressed for the occasion!

You could try searching ucc graduation 2010 on google images to see what people wore to their graduation last year. There's a load of photos up.

Considering the OP was asking should they wear a dress/skirt I certainly hope this isn't the case.

A nice dress would be good, lbd or something like that!! Heels, etc. girls prob shouldn't have an up-do in their hair, as we have to wear the hat.. hope this helps!!:)

Most girls wear dresses for the grad, just above the knee. What I find looks best is a dress that's fitted and in a bright colour, the contrast between that and the loose black gown always works well. Depends on what type of hair you have, I left mine down and put slight waves through it while others I know had an updo. All I'd recommend hairwise is to make sure you're not rushing putting on the hat, take the time to make sure it's well pinned in the position you want it so you'll be comfortable later on in the day when taking pictures.

Make sure you make the most of the day, it really is a great occasion. I'd love to be back this time last year doing it all again! Have fun.

not for me, but if you haven't reserved your gown before turning up, do they hire out ones on the day?
