Trying to get Freeview in the bedroom

Totally new to this. Have a tv in the bedroom that we've only used for dvd's up to now (have sky downstairs). Picked up a freeview box in Power City yesterday and an amplified aerial that connects to the tv. We had in the past a tv up there with a standard aerial and with a signal booster managed to pick up the basic Irish 4 with almost ok reception. Anyway, you can see the channels coming in but reception not good enough to watch. Could it just be that the signal available in that part of the house/in our area (Malahide) isn't strong enough or should a much stronger booster sort it out - one we got amplifies up to 20dB but I've seen ones up to 46dB (way more expensive though). I know a roof aerial would probably be better but we're selling the house and only have another month here so while that might be worth trying in the new place, it's not worth it for us now in this house.
Any ideas, should what we're doing work - in theory?

Signal strength appears not to be good enough in the room with an internal aerial. External aerial would be the best option but probably not worth installing one just for the month.

You could try a long co-ax lead with the internal aerial to a window facing the transmitter location. Bit untidy though.

as you have sky a fta box would be the answer you can pick up an old sky box from €10 that get will get most of the freeview channels just remove the card.

There is only one thing that is a bigger waste of money than indoor aerials, and that is amplified indoor aerials.
You amplify the noise as well as the signal and are no better off.
Do without TV in the bedroom now and put the money towards a decent aerial (outdoor) at your new home.

Thanks for the replies - actually we tried it downstairs and it worked perfectly so knew we were doing it the right way, so spent a bit of time on it and have found a spot on the windowsill in the bedroom where it works fine. 2 inches either side and we get nothing.

it depends on where your pointing your Aerial since in North Dublin the Louth Saorview tx may be nearer and more accessible for line of sight than Kippure or three rock
