A bit more info please... what type of kit car do you want???

I helped a mate in Australia build a Ford GT-40 kit, he got it from Roaring 40's from memory.. we did it over a year in his shed & loved every minute of it... it's so nice to work on a car where all the bits are spotless & clean & no parts are rusted on

I've always wanted to build one but that's unlikely to happen now we have a house with no garage

Have a look at 'a car Is born' tv show to get an idea of whats involved too, and The costs/tools needed to make sure your dream car doesn't become another 'unfinished project' on donedeal!

Best of luck with it :-)

2 words: hawk hf. Exact replica of a lancia stratos. The sexiest kit kar in the world in rally trim. You might remember they had one on top gear that they made a complete mockery of for no reason.

I have built a few in my time (on my fifth on at the moment) and for me the fun is in the build, because gods knows it's a nightmare trying to get them on the road when you are finished.
There has been some good advice and suggestions already, but it boils down to how much you want to spend in both money and time, and I would advise a trip over to one of the shows in the UK to talk to the manufacturers who attend, the biggest and best one is Stoneleigh in May.

I'd love to pick up a Cobra replica, but I'll check out what's on offer first and the costs.

Whats the story here in ireland with getting them registered? If you build something on a ford sierra chassis for example, I know in uk you keep the reg of the donor car after having an inspection or whatever but there is no procedure in place here is there?

Or what about trying to vrt a uk built kit car?

If you use the Donor Chassis for your Kit car then you can keep the reg of it the same as in the UK. But that limits you mainly to Beetle and MR2 based Kits as the Body can be easily removed from them.

If you go for a new Chassis based Kit (like all of the Cobras) then when you have it competed it is treated exactly as if you bring a new Car in from the UK in that it is given a OSMP and then depending on the CO2 emmissons value of the engine you use, they get multiplied together in the usual way to give the VRT figure.
There is 2 problems with this in that the OMSP that they come up with can be miles over or under what it should be, great if it is miles under but that scenario is very rare, usually it is miles over estimated. The second is that in most Kit cars an older or Bike engine is used and because the CO2 value is not obtainable for them from the manufacturer (the only value they will accept) then you are put in the top bracket of 33%, which is bad enough for VRT but then it is the Road tax that kill you.

VRTing a UK kit follows as above.

Of course if you're a belligerent (sp?) git like me you'd try putting a small efficient engine in for the VRT inspection and swap it out for something with a bit more grunt later....

i would also dream of building a cobra but i think tax , insurance, vrt, nct, could be a nightmare would probably be better off to buy an mx5 and just imagine it is a cobra !!!

A few queries on all this -
Have you registered any kits since the NCT people too over vrt process?
Also, it sounds very odd to me that anyone can come up with a co2 figure for an engine alone, after all, the figure would depend on the car body weight and 100 other factors.
Is there a process here that I go through if I use a beetle chasis for example to build something. Surely I must have to get the reg cert changed from bettle?

No, the last one was 2 years ago, but i don't see why it should be any different than going to a VRO, they will still need to go to Roselare to get the OMSP for the car

Your dead right it does have a big efect but the VRO have no other way to get an actual value, so they use the manufacturers one from the Donor car it came out of.

Personally I have never built one of these types but I believe from the VRO perspective it is still a beetle with just a body kit on it...
