inset vs cassette stove question

    Hi

am I right in thinking that an inset stove will fit into an existing fireplace but a cassette stove needs a special opening made for it?

I've been admiring paddy147's pics but I don't think I can afford to get changes made to the fireplace. I'd love to take the hearth down to floor level, but alas am short of cash and need to do the job as economically as possible.

My other question is, if I pull out the existing massive mantlepiece and cast-iron surround, can I leave them off in the same way as paddy147 did but using an inset stove rather than a cassette stove?

(I've no back boiler or anything)
