Hi. Starting work with one of the BIG4 next month and really looking forward to it! Just wondering what should I be expecting for the first few weeks of training. Any tips, or things I should look out for?;). I'll be in audit. Thanks.

Enjoy the first few months, they'll be the best of your training contract.

Plenty of banter with nights out, new people etc

    Best of luck

Well a few things stand out from my days:
    • Dress like an accountant - There is nothing as bad as having the managing partner ask one of your collegues to remove you from the premises because he though you'd found your way in of the street by accident!
    • Don't tell the partner's daughter that he's a real "lady's man", actually this is worse than the first one!
    • Don't try to pay the founding partner for the drinks at the welcoming party
    • Don't shake the partner's hand every time he makes a jesture
    • Don't think you're more important than the secetaries, you're not! They actually know what they are doing and at least in our days, they were paid more than we were!

Apart from that you should do just fine.

And as the say here in Switzerland, "Have a good start"

    Jim

Take it seriously. Get involved in the break out sessions at training courses. Think of sensible questions to ask but don't ask something everytime. Try and show some leadership early on as you are on show from day 1. Don't come in smelling or alcohol or dressed untidily.
Be friendly to people. Introduce yourself. Have a firm handshake (this actually matters believe it or not), show interest in the work even though tasks will be pretty menial for the first while.

Agree with all of that. Good advice.

You're not in college any more, so don't behave like you are. Arrive on time, be polite, especially to clients. Shave every day. Don't moan. Put the head down, check your work and get it done within deadline. Be a team player.

Training wise have a laugh. It's all about getting to know people. Go on all the organised drinks they have planned.

Work wise, understand what you do. If you're told to just copy the prior year make sure you know what it is you're copying...

Go on every night out, mix and enjoy it. Avoid the Partners, managers towards the end of the nights out:D and be prepared for a lot of photocopying and 'ticking and bashing'
