I was considering building a set top box for freesat, saorview, recording and 1080p video playback. Has the open source software moved on enough that it is ultra reliable and a nice interface. Say comparable to UPC/SKY for every day use in the sitting room ?

Didn't know that this could be done. Very interested!

I think xbmc has caught up but it will depend on your other requirements. I want to build a silent mini it'd system similar to yours but can't find a board good enough

It would be considerably cheaper and easier to get a combo box that does practically all you are requesting. Most modern boxes can play content off an extenal USB HD also.

    http://www.tvtrade.ie/combo-box-smart-cx61.html for example.
