Hi Guys, If i could get your advice on something I'd really appreciate it.

I have a 00 Opel Corsa and there is a big problem with it!

I drove from Limerick to Athlone yesterday and bumpy parts I felt the suspension felt off or something, its was a bit wobbly after a bump, but not too bad so i didnt think much of it.

Went out to the car last night and I noticed that the back passenger wheel was leaning in towards the car, pretty badly (like it was clear as day walking towards the car that the wheel was bent inwards.

I jacked up the car this morning and the attached photos is what i found. There appears to be a large crack in the axle (my car knowledge isnt great so please feel free to correct anything you think may be wrong)

When i jacked it up i noticed fairly big wear damage on the shock (photo attached). The tire on the driver side is on the very inside is down to thread on some parts of it (while other parts of the inside the tire look fine)

Looks like i got very lucky! :o

Is it even worth arranging to bring it somewhere to get a price? The car is probably worth about what €700-800 if in good order, any ideas how much this would cost (even roughly).

Its my first car, I've had it for 6 and a half years, its served me well but if it doesnt make sense to fix that will be that!

If you need anymore photos to help diagnose please ask and I will take them.

    Thanks

If you have good tyres on it and the NCT is close to a year left on it then it may be worth fixing, otherwise I'd say not worth putting any money in to it.

    Thanks.

Tires are ok, Back driver needs to be replaced.

    NCT up in April 12

No Tax on it (out since August)

    Almost 120k miles

I cant really make out what the "hole" is .It looks to me as if its a rusted out sheet steel panel rather than part of the suspension.

The wheel leaning in like that and rubbing on the shock would make me think wheel bearing or suspension busehes...but Im not a mechanic and know nothing about Corsas

The first think you need to do IMO is not drive that car for any distance on a road!

It loots like the rear axle has rusted through just behind the hub and the reason the wheels is rubbing the shock is literally because the axle is starting to collapse!

I've seen it happen to corsa's in the UK but I've never seen a corsa here with the axle rusted like that!

Your problem is the labour cost in changing the rear axle if you can't do it yourself as you'd pick up a corsa axle in a scrappy for feck all I'd say.

    Hi guys,

Would anyone be able to confirm for certain that the thing with the hole in it is the rear axle? Im after finding the part for €60 of a scrap yard and getting someone to fit it for €80, i just need to make sure im buying teh right part and getting quotes for the right job!

Thanks! Looks like me and the corsa could be hanging out for another while yet :D

    EDIT:
Also do i need to/ should i get a replacement cover for the shock (is it the shock?) as seen in DSC_0267.jpg in the OP?

Yes thats the rear axle alright and those prices aren't bad either.

The shock looks like its just been rubbed by the tyre, I'd say it should be fine.

Hmmm, makes me wonder about mine now. Think I'll test out the axle stands and hydraulic jack tonight.

Thanks nissan doc, yeah i was really pleased with both prices, truth be told I had expected both prices to be double what they were! (They were the first places i tried to!)

@Confab yeah i couldnt believe it! I think I'll be having a quick look under teh car every now and again from here on in!
