What diesel car would you buy?

I am looking for the benefit of your wisdom. The budget is 20-24k and I want to buy a new diesel. I do a lot of driving, and by the time I get to sell it, it won't be worth much. Are there any good deals that have caught your eyes?

If you could up the budget to €25715 I'd go with the Skoda Superb, smashing value for the money.

Sure, but he's reassuringly right wing. If he didn't like the car, boy would he let you know.

I'd sure prefer one to an oversized, ugly arsed and underpowered Superb but I'm not sold on the front end looks. Maybe it'll grow on me. It seems to be getting a lot of good reviews though.

The Superb saloon is half finished but the wagon looks decent. Unfortunately most in Ireland will be ugly.

Spent some time in a 1.6 diesel lately and it's not half as bad as I imagined. Also oversized? It's long but hardly a handful.

BMW 520D...for that money you'd pick up a 08 model with a 2 year warranty from BMW or a 2009 model from a normal dealer.
Low tax (€156) and very fuel efficient. Over a 2 week period I'm saving about €40 over my last car (2005 petrol 1.6 nissan primera)
Nice bit of poke in it, very comfortable with leather interior and fantastic to drive...

i've put about 18,000 miles on mine in the last six months and it has actually quite impressed me (coming from a 200bhp hot hatch).

Mine is the estate ... for space, comfort, efficiency, gadgets and budget hard to beat really.

As for the oversized, not really a problem .. and the park assist makes finding a space on the street that little bit easier (although in ireland for some reason other drivers don't seem to get the notion of allowing people space to parallel park !!)

I used to drive 40k - 60k pa for a living, and when driving is the main activity, you won't give a hoot what the outside looks like, so long as the inside is comfortable and efficient.

For driving big miles, buy it from the inside-out, first.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Likewise I have the same engine in the superb - 6k kms up after 3 months and no issues. The acceleration isnt going to set the world alight, but it cruises along quite happily at 120km/h on the motorway at 2,000 revs. The cabin (apart from carpets) is a great place to be in elegance spec

a SKODA OCTAVIA TDI no doubt about it, or if you dont trust my opinion just look at what the TAXI drivers are using, they cant afford to be let down. they are very good on fuel and come with a VW engine. they are cumfy and spacious and even look the part what more can you ask for.

Seriously, the octavia jokes need to end.

The new Mondeo is a nice car probably pick one up in your price range.

seconded! Just bought a new Titanium a couple of weeks back and have to say so far the most comfortable ride I've ever had. Done to date around 4k, Dublin to Cork etc is a breeze, really solid on the road, handling is superb and bags of power on the lower 140PS model I bought, 160 is more expensive and from what I've experienced unnecessary.

Brand new model might be a bit outside your price range but I did see a couple of used '11's for sale when I was researching that you could could probably pick up for around that.

If you were to consider the Mondeo I'd advise taking a look at the hatchback. Profile is imho sportier than the saloon with a ton of extra space. Before I stuck the roof rack on I was putting two adult mountain bikes in with room to spare.
