Hi i'm goin to Maynooth in September and i am doing an arts degree in English, Sociology and maybe Anthropology. I was looking at the time table and it seems that i'm in nearly all day every day for lectures for English. Does anybody know how many hours of lectures you do in the first year for English. it seems that there are awful lot of lectures for English than there are Sociology or Anthropology. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Last year we had 2 lecture hours and 2 tutorial hours in semester 1 and 4 lecture hours in semester 2

Haven't a timetable in front of me but I'd imagine you are reading it all wrong. The general split in first year is 4 hours of lectures (including tutorials) per subject per week. That means you'll have 12 hours a week on average.

Same I want to do Arts with English, Sociology and Psychology. Really I'm not too concerned about how much lecture time we will have, it will keep me occupied during the daytime to vary my day from the society meetings I attend in the evening.

Hi Last Chance,I am going into my third year in English but I took the single honours route (MH114) which meant that I had extra English lectures (8) and one other subject, history, (4). I remember some students coming into our group as they thought that they had to do the same modules as us,easy mistake, the extra modules were EN171, EN172, EN173 and EN174. Good luck ;)

Thanks for all your replies. I think I am reading it wrong. I don't mind doing lectures it just seemed ridiculous that I had no free time during the day to catch up with study and that. I will go back in and look at it again. Louliewan thank you so much for your help, I think I must of been including them into it aswell.

If it's the page I think you're looking at, then you might be seeing loads of EN150's? I think that's a case where the class is divided into lots of smaller groups. You'd presumably only be in one of those groups, i.e. for 2 sessions a week. And you'd be in either EN152A or B, not both. The class is large so they split it up sometimes.

Don't take my word for it though, I haven't done English since 1st year, and my other two subjects had much lower numbers.

No bother Last Chance, I remember the confusion like it was yesterday :D. I would recommend attending the orientation days as you can pose all these questions there and get an idea of where things are during the tours of the campus. The support centre is great if you encounter any difficulties. They run a course called Student +, which I found out about in semester two, and as a mature student I found it invaluable.

Lack of free time won't be a problem while doing an arts degree!! Piece of advice for first year English is to go to the tutorials especially the ones before Christmas, they are incredibly helpful!

Hi Mickstupp, that is the page that keeps coming up, there are loads of EN150's. Thank you for explaining it to me. I will certainly enquire about the Student+ course aswell. Thanks again for all the replies.
