Neighbour has a bmw 520d 08 and recently he woke up to find lots of stuff around the car. It appears that someone gained entry and stole around 500 euro worth of stuff. He is not sure if he locked it with remote control but thinks he may have. Car was not damaged in any way and I wonder would it be possible to gain entry to a car like this without forcing a door or window :confused:

One thing that has happened to me is that I have managed to open the boot (fully opened for the world to see, not just unlocked) on my audi from inside the house one evening and I didnt see it til morning. Luckily i live in the middle of nowhere and nobody would touch.
Could this have happened your neighbour?

I think in most of these cases, it is indeed an inadvertent unlock, or the owner forgetting to lock.

I've surprised myself the very odd time coming out to an unlocked car, thinking i'd locked it when i parked up the day before. I'm sure we've all done it.

Simply unlocking by accident wont do it as the car will lock itself again if no doors are opened

I have accidently unlocked the boot on my e90 3series and only realised when I went to drive away the next morning(audible warning sounds). You can't see that it is open as it only moves about 2mm when you press the release.

This might have happened and they could gain access through the boot. I would bet that it wasn't locked in the first place. Lots of thieves walk around at night checking door handles and eventually they will find an open one.
