    Hi folks,
i need some advice I moved to the UK in jan 2010 with my boyfriend as he got a huge promotion so i agreeded to move to the UK with him which was all fine i didnt work in the UK and didnt claim benefits as i didnt want to scrounge off the UK gov seeing as he was earning enough for both of us to live - but now he is being promoted again but this time to China, we are splitting up and I am movign back to IReland as cHina is jst too far from my family for me to move. now the problem is i have every box ticked for the VRT - tax, insurance, mot, tyres, service history. Bank, credit cards, doctors bills, tesco club cards, gym and tenancy agreement BUT NO P45 or evidence of social welfare - i rang the VRT office explained my situation and was told "the onus is on you to provide evidence of living in teh UK" im now collecting my tesco receipts! how do i differentiate myself from a student? i could be over reacting but im jst afraid il land home and they will refuse VRT or make out im trying to avoid paying tax. - how do i differentiate myself from a student or how does the irish authorities trace an irish student studying in the UK?how do the Irish authorities trace a person working/not working in the UK? how do i prove my existance or is it enough that I have everything bar a p45? I'm sorry to sound paranoid but i just couldnt get a straight answer from anyone in the VRT and now i'm twice as paranoid about bringing the car home.

if anyone could help me i would really really appreciate it,
    thanks in advance

Tenancy agreement should be enough but ideally you would need a household utility bill in your name as more proof, they shouldnt' be able to refuse that. Is the car in your name or his?

its my own car that i bought in northern ireland before coming over here iv uk drivers licence, v5 cert tax insurance everything is in my name.
unfortunately the house we had was all bills included so no utility bills, plus used credit phone not bill phone so technically the "only" bills i have are fuel and food, im just very cautious as iv read through so many posts online and now dont even want to bring the car home it just seems like the VRT are out to make life very difficult i just got such a snotty response from them "oh we'l see".... "the onus is on you to provide details of living in the UK" i kind of feel like an illegal alien for being over in the UK and not having worked -
do you know what level of digging the VRT do on people who are transferring resisdency back to Ireland from the UK? im getting the vibe that i will get treated as a student because i've no p45,
oh its just all one big confusing mess!

Did it myself in the past and the VRT people i was dealing with where grand in fairness. Just bring in anything you have that can show you were living in England, such as any bank accounts, mobile phones bills, and things like gym membership or video shop membership, anything really that show's you were a resident.

Does not matter if you were working or not,you just have to prove you lived in England for the correct amount of time so you can bring the car back without having to pay the VRT on it.

I must actually sign up for video membership never thought of that one! Im not moving until end of September so I probably should start to rack up a few more "bills" here before I do end up moving back, Iv had gym membership for a year when i lived in Manchester but since moving south in May have had very little bills etc - i should probably get the car serviced over here is my friend used to service it at home in Dublin when i went back on holidays.
Did they ever mention P45s to you in the past? and roughly how long does it take them before they give you the yes or no?
did they question you on your reasons for coming back home?
sorry for all the questions! :o

Just told them i was moving back for job reasons, they did not mention anything about P45,just wanted proof that i lived in England for the correct amount of time. I gave them bank statements, utility bills, phone bills and a couple of other things. They did it there and then, took about half an hour(not including queuing) and they gave me my new irish reg number.

Did you register to vote while you were there? A letter from your local council to that effect would be very useful.

Hi Sorry I don't understand what you mean by the "poll tax receipts?"

You should be paying council tax aka poll tax. There should be receipts for that.

The house was "all bills included" so never had to pay council tax beginning to regret that now!

I doubt they paid the council tax at all. Council tax is the responsibility of the people living in the house. By not being on the electoral register they must have missed you.

If they really paid it they would have a receipt with your name on it.

I must contact my old landlord in Manchester and ask her what the story was with the electorate, as far as I am aware she had two rented houses lived in one of them as a live in landlord and then we had the other house, she wasnt the type to avoid tax the direct opposite to be honest very much a law abiding citizen!! :D- but both houses were all bills included.
I have signed on to the electorate now with my new address and gave them my old address in Manchester must check it out with her what the story was. its annoying you never really think of these things at the time!
