Doubt there's such thing as ''best'' but a car with a good retail value would be the Toyota Yaris.

Thanks for replies!! From what I can gather, a Golf will always have a better resale value than a citroen, although before you say it I know a golf will cost more than a citroen.

The Mini range seem to all hold their value quite well at the moment, especially the diesel...

Bugatti Veyron holds its value well too apparently....

go for something in the middle resale and cost wise like a focus or an astra, not dreadfully expensive to buy and will hold their value for being good solid cars

Any car for a grand that is a diesel. If you bought say a diesel avensis for a grand with an nct, drove it for two years youd sell it for 900..

The problem with projecting resale values is that to calculate it properly requires a crystal ball. In the meantime, i'd buy something that you like, and that shouldn't cost too much to run.

I hear ya!! Thanks for your input. I'll Just keep looking. When I ask around bought various cars all I hear is wouldn't touch that car not reliant, parts too expensive, not great on fuel........! Just want a car that's reliable and not too expensive to run - it will definitely be a diesel!!

People in this country are buying diesels for the school run and the short run to the shops. Its madness the way the second hand market has gone. A diesel has no place being bought for the above purposes and its skewing the market towards diesels only, while there is some perfectly good petrols going for handy money now that no-one will consider.

    Buy a 2 grand car.
Use it for 2-3 years, sell it for 1000eur or something.
Depreciation over 3 years of 1000eur. Its as good as it can get.

Theres no straight forward answer to this but here's my take on it.

I see above that somebody suggested a diesel BMW. Well yes and no. Its all about the real amount of money lost between the date you first buy your car and the time you sell it. Stick with me here.

If you buy a car , say a new diesel BMW for example and it cost 50 grand and then three years later you sell it for 25 grand then you've lost 50% of its worth over 3 years or in real terms 25 grand. If you buy a diesel car of similar size from a non premium brand for say 30 grand and after 3 years its lost 60% of its value then its only worth 12 grand at the end. But, and heres the big but , you've still lost less cash even though the percentage loss is far greater with the non premium brand. Sure if you want to trade your non premium brand in against a BMW after those 3 years then its going to cost you more money than if you had a 3 year old BMW to trade in but most likey it'll cost you less to go back and buy the same car again.

The above figures are very far from exact and the model picked i.e the BMW does not in any way suggest that these would reflect its true value, I just used it for the purpose of example.

honda nsx and alfa Sprint Zagato off the top of my head

if anything the prices seem to go up for pristine examples.

    I love this ...

but would be very slow to drive it or park it due to scummish behaviour. headlights no longer available for instance.

hmmm, the headlights look like something you could get in woodies .. but still .<3

i dont think any one car has the best resale value at the moment. Its all about buying the right car at the right time!

For instance, heres my last few cars since April 2009 :

    April 2009 bought 2005 E90 320d for 10,700
    Octobler 2009 Solde E90 for 13,100.

October 2009 bought 2002 MG ZR for 1,900 on adverts.
April 2010 sold MG ZR for 2100

    April 2010 bought Audi S3 for 5,800
    October 2010 sold S3 for 6,850

    October 2010 bought 2002 E46 320d SE for 5,200
    July 2011 sold E46 for 5,500

    August 2011 bought 2003 E39 530d Aegean Blue Limited Edition :D
wont release the price until after i sell it, if i do :D

Not one car needed a service, or any work, no tyres etc etc, a few bits and pieces like wipers and general valet's by myself, so ive had a lucky few years.

As you can see, a big variety of different cars, and shows if you buy a car based on condition and history and spec, they will sell better than basic cars with less miles, the E90 had 121k when i sold her, the S3 had 106k and the E46 had 103k. but all with FSH and documented mileage.

Without a doubt it’s a few years old Toyota/VAG and diesel.
You cannot compete with Irish groupthink. So unless you can afford to chuck money away, to minimise depreciation, I'm afraid you have to purchase what everyone else is buying/looking for.

Just on the NSX, they may hold their value ... but how many are being sold?
I keep an eye on NSXs on carzone and the ones for sale there have pretty much been there for a few years at this stage.

A car holding it's value is not much use if the seller wants to actually sell it.
