Im thinking of switching to 3 mobiles 1GB plan a month as i wont be using the internet as much as i was.
So just for checking email daily and the odd site, is 1gig enough? i hear its expensive if you go over the limit.
    thanks

are you planning on using this for a laptop or for a phone?

    I use about 1GB a day :P It's not a lot, 1GB is 1024mb. Downloading 1 song is about 5MB- 8MB
    If it's just e-mail you'll have more than plenty I'd say :)

If it's 3 mobile broadband and you'll be using it on a laptop/pc you'll really have to ration your data usage. Things like automatic updates and what not will use bandwidth

1GB/Month is fine if thats all you are doing, but you'd really want to eyeball your consumption for the first few weeks.

Normally unless the company is a monolithic douche, willing to lose it's subscribers, if you go over your limit to disastrous consequences they can retroactively change your subscription to the higher monthly plan to stop you from paying overages.

I assume they charge overage by the MB not the GB? The MB (or even KB) works out to be far more expensive.

A frien of mine had one of those on a pc and he was using his allowance rapidly. He reckons it was programs updating in the background, like AV, winupdates etc.

    So maybe watch that.

It occurred to me though that if one stopped the updates one could be left vulnerable. Am i right?

The AV updates should be fairly small and very important so I wouldn't worry about leaving them on.

Although OS updates are also important, you can turn off automatic updates on Windows as they can be quite large, you will still get notified when they are available, but can chose when download and install them (when you are connnected to a different network with a bigger allocation for example).

@OP 1GB should be plenty for web browsing and email once you go don't do much Video streaming.
