    Hi,
Would anybody be able to recommed a good course in Cork for green fees for a morning mid week tee-time?
I'm just after ringing Fota island and they quoted me €62 which i felt was a bit steep for a Tuesday morning.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

I got Fota 2 weeks ago, Saturday mid day tee time for €45 a skull, 2 people play and you get free buggy hire. They traditionally have their opens on a tuesday, so thats why you were quoted that price, book online and you can get any other day midweek for €38 a head.

    https://www.brsgolf.com/fotaisland/visitor_home.php

Played Cork Golf Club a few days after for €48 on a tuesday morning, super course aswell.

    Hi Tommy,

Depends on what your looking for but in my opinion ring around and you should get green fee's for €30 or less in most places on a Tuesday morning unless they are busy, try Castlemartyr, Waterrock is a nice little course if your a medium to high handicapper, you would be surprised how fun Mahon is and that would prob be €18. Cobh has lovely greens and a few very good holes if you haven't played there yet, again should get it for €25.

    Lee valley Monday's €20 or €25
    Muskerry Tuesday's €20
Blarney or kinsale( not great IMO) wednesdays €20 probably get blarney any day got that if you try
    Bandon Thursday's €20
    Douglas Fridays €??
All above are open comps as far as I know
I would often do Muskerry and the odd run at lee valley blarney or Douglas
    All are pretty good tests

Haven't played Bandon yet but a good friend of mine(Ring of Kerry member) played there recently and said it was by far and away the best course he has played in a good while.

Thanks to everybody for their help, some great suggestions, decided to go for Fota for Monday for €38.When booking i'm told its for their "course of the day". i assume all 3 of their courses are of good quality.

bandon would also have been nice, but in wrong direction for me

Macroom GC is €10 on Mondays. There is an Open Competition every Thursday for €20 also.

No there not the new 9 are not too hot compared to the old 18
Personally I wouldn't pay €38 if they were included having played them a few times
If you haven't played fota before then give em a bash

    Bandon is a fine track
but if it's the best he's played in good while, he's probably not playing anything special that often

Disclaimer first - im a member of Fota. But I play a lot of opens / scratch cups around the country.

One thing to be considered is the quality of the courses being quoted. You can't compare some mentioned with places like Fota or Cork or Douglas. I agree 62e midweek is too much, but to suggest, for example, Macroom as an alternative is not comparing like with like. Even Cork & Douglas, good courses & always in great condition, are a fraction of the acreage to be maintained & don't have the length to compare.

Yes I'm biased, but it's unfair to criticise the prices, but then expect the higher standards to be maintained. Hope you enjoy the day OP. Let me know how you get on.

Dont want to step on any toes, but Fota is highly over rated imo. I'll state again thats my view and many of my mates agree. Deerpark is good but steep in prices, the Bevelly or whatever its called is ok but insane long! even off the whites and I was driving well.

    +1
Muskerry and lee valley would be as good if not better than Douglas in my opinion
A touch behind Cork (very little)
    Not as good as Fota

I'd rather lee valley any day myself than having to play the new 9 in Fota in the18

And at close to half the price way better value

Played Cork G.C. for the first time last week and while it is a nice course, i was expecting much more from it the way people rave about it.They have used the land well there but even walking down to the first tee,it felt a little cramped.

If i had to pick a 1,2,3 of Cork courses i have played it would be
    1. Lee Valley
    2. Fota
    3. Muskerry

Bandon is a nice course but not quite up there with the 3 above. For a 20 euro green fee,Mitchelstown is also decent enough(new holes aside) and probably a little underrated.

You should try playing the blues in a medal - your arms are hanging by the end! :)

Everyone to their own tho - I enjoy playing all the courses mentioned - theres a great mix of styles & lengths of courses around cork.

Try Castlemartyr. Think you can get a deal before 10 or after 4 for around 25. Very nice course and hasnt been mentioned. Only 20-15 mins beyond fota.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 298 ✭✭mr.mickels

I played Castlemartyr today. A nice course, very pleasant, the rough grown out with the fescue grass works very well and they did a very good job with the contours of the greens, many of the other courses built in the last 20 years went way OTT with the severity of the greens.

For societies and casual rounds I think it should be very enjoyable, a pleasant track with plenty space. For the low handicappers or longer hitters the course would definitely benefit from extra yardage on the par 4's. It seems there was alot of money spent there and appears to be plenty land available so would wonder why they built it so short. Having said that I would rate it higher than many of the other courses in Cork.

I would find it difficult to understand how any golfer can rate Lee Valley higher than Fota or Cork, or even Castlemartyer. Alot of the greens are too severe and a few weak holes in there.
I agree that Fota and Cork are over-rated, but I would still rate them higher than Lee Valley. If those severe greens were redone it would make a big improvement.

Muskerry is one of the worst courses in Cork with maybe half a dozen good holes. I would rank Cork & Fota as the best 2 courses. A very good value for money course which is close to the city is Cobh GC. Good test of golf with good quality greens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,082 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

My list of cork golf club's:

    1. CastleMarytr
    2. Fota
    3. Cork
    Then
    Cobh, Bandon, Waterrock, Macroom, Mitchelstown,

    etc

    Haven't played Muskerry yet..

last would be Lee Valley, can't fall for it and the 2 times I played, the bunkers were full of stones and dust (sand would have been nice).

Played Castlemarytr last week for e25, great value.

What is wrong with Muskerry. I think its a fine track and bar the junior scratch cup this year was always in top condition. I liked cobh as well and the par 3 10th is a class hole but i found the greens to be like rocks. Had to land balls short of the green in order to get them on.

My order of prefrence would be
    1. Old Head ( Wouldnt want to play it every week in this climate but on a fine day)
    2. Fota ( Original 18)
    3. Cork ( Gets better every time i play it)
    4. Casatlemartyr ( Top quality every time ive played)
    5. Lee Valley ( serious test of the blue tees )
    6. Any of Mallow, Muskerry, Mitchelstown, Bandon ( strong courses)
    9. Fermoy ( Know some who love and hate it, I like it)
10.Blarney ( Could do with a couple more par 5s)
11 Cobh ( Greens bug me but nice)
12 Douglas ( Nice but over rated and over priced)
13 Mahon ( Could be lovely but condition is hit and miss)
14 Monkstown ( Same as Douglas but shorter and douglas aint long)
15 Charleville ( Probably have this course too low but not for me)
16 Waterock ( Good for beginers)
17 East Cork ( Not a great course but enjoyable all the same)

Cant think of many others ive played around cork

I would roughly agree with this, its hard to number courses from 1 to 10 but would agree with the first 3. I would have the 18 hole in Kinsale somewhere in the top half dozen also, some good holes there. Lack of yardage on the par 4s would count very much against Castlemartyer but enjoyable track, some use of water features may have enhanced it also.
I don't think the members in Monkstown or Douglas would be impressed of your rating system, considering you have Mahon alongside them :)

One of the old boys in Monkstown GC nearly swallowed his false teeth when he saw Mahon ahead of them

I just think that Lee Valley is a good test off the back sticks. When you take into account the green fee price(i know you can get Cork for 50 early bird and can get Fota for 35 euro but i'm basing it on their full weekend green fee)its better vfm than the other 2.I understand what you are saying about some weak holes but to be honest,i think every course has those.
I like Castlemartyr as a day out and it is very open and quite forgiving compared to some of the others metioned(always in good condition as well).

I wasn't taking price into consideration, just basing it on the course. I don't know what prices Old Head, Fota and Cork are these days, but last time I looked I would think they were alot overpriced. I would think 50 euro is too much for Cork, early bird or not. It was the reverse in the UK when I used live there, Early bird golf was MORE expensive than after 10am, as most UK golfers wanted to play as early as possible and the courses would be quiet after lunch.
If Fota is 35 now then that is reduction from what I was told previously.
