manky water tank

The tank in my attic is uncovered and I sometimes get spider-legs and things in my bath water.
Can these tanks actually be removed and cleaned out and is there some kind of cover I can get for it? Maybe it would be easier to replace it with a covered model but would a plumber be needed then?

You can generally get lids to fit plastic tanks, I always fit a byelaw 60 kit as it protects the stored water. I would suggest getting a plumber to clean the tank and disinfect the tank and pipework.

Drain & clean your tank, flush it clean a few times with milton, buy or make a lid, job done.

If its a black plastic tank it can be cleaned but if its thr old galvanised type you cant clean these it would have to be replaced

    hi,
Agree with last post. if the tank is galvanised replace it with a plastic tank and lid.If plastic you can clean it.Turn of the mains water and drain the tank via bath and basin taps and clean it .If you are putting a lid on yourself make sure the expansion pipe goes into the tank.

No point in starting a new thread for this.

We had a new tank fitted during renovations. Black plastic. Actually 2 tanks due to space/location considerations. They are over 1 metre long each and about 500mm wide. There is one or 2 qualpex pips joining both tanks at the bottom.

I was quite perplexed when I noticed that one tank seemed to have lovely clean water while the other tank had a film on the surface and some staining around the rim edge at the waterline. Eventually it dawned on me why this was. The ball cock and mains feed is into the clean tank. This churns the water in that tank stopping a film from forming on the surface. However the other tank is fed from the other tank from the joining qualpex from the bottom up and thus the surface is never disturbed.

So my question is, can I assume this film is just dust and all I need to do is wipe the sides and give it a good stir, drain the tanks most of the way but not all the way and then fit some lids. Or do I need to drain them fully and do the job with the milton. Its just I worry about fully draining because although this is a total replumb I had a terrible time clearing an airlock in this house pre renovation/replumb 2 years ago. That was bird feathers blocking the feed to the old Hot water Cylinder !! I had the brother downstairs holding a mouthwash bottle over the mixer tap with all his might and when water started gushing out of the expansion pipe back into the water tank, I had to plug that with my finger with all my might to eventually force what turned out to be feathers back up the pipe from the hot water cyclinder to the cold water tank. The sense of satisfaction I got from that was amazing as my Marine Engineer uncle failed to sort it the day before...."Go on ye good thing!! **** Yeah!! :D Even better when the plumber we had booked arrived 5 days after he said he would and I got to tell him, "Too late mate, I sorted it myself, couldn't be without hot water for nearly a week, Bye Bye now!" :D.

Sorry, I digress. Can a full drain of the tanks cause another airlock or give me headaches? :D

yes in the pipes from the attic that are not on a proper fall or air pockets can create at bends ect. you could get air locks.
if theres dirt particles in the tank they can get caught in orifices (filler valves) ect.

Syphon the tanks.....if you get air locks turn off the valves in the hotpress filling the hot/cold disconnect the closed side open into a bucket. air will released. (to solve air locks from the tank area).

Check how the tanks are piped , the correct way is for the ballcock and overflow to be connected into one tank and the draw offs connected into the other one
