I've been running for a little over a year and decided to try run the Dublin marathon. anyway when I go for a longish run I would normally apply vaseline to stop bleeding nipples. I've found lately that the running tops (dri fit ) are all stained and I can't seem to remove them.(the stains ) I've used vanish and soaked the tops to no avail. the washing machine is set to 30 degree. wash. would I need a hotter wash ( didn't want to try it in case I ruined the tops. or if any other suggestions are available I'm all ears. thanks

Don't know if this helps but you could perhaps use BodyGlide instead of vaseline?

I'm guessing some other more experienced marathoners will have other suggestions though.

id say it might be too late to get the stains removed.in Future use Bodyglide as this doesn't stain the clothing and doesn't come away from the body due to heat.

Just put band-aids (the fabric ones) over the nips. A bit uncomfortable taking them off again, but saves a lot of pain during the run, and no stains.

Even better - a bit of cotton wool for each nip, held in place with micropore tape. No pain on the run or afterwards

Washing detergent won't remove stains from Vaseline, you'll need something that will cut through grease. Try handwashing the area with washing up liquid, then put them through a warm wash cycle. You could also try a stain remover for grease/oil.

Best thing to prevent bleeding nipples is to wear a t-shirt that is too small.

sorry for the delay, managed to get most of the stains out with a mixture of handwashing and steeping overnight. Thank you. I went to the chemist and they were out of bodyglide but they had another product called Lanacane anti chafing gel. Was ok on short runs but did the half marathon in Waterford at the weekend and the nips are in bits even though I put loads of the cream on. How am I going to get thru Dublin without looking like someone who's been shot twice in the chest?

Reminds me of a story when a nordy lad at work was getting sore nipples from doing the running so another lad suggested he needed chafing gel.

He went to the chemist that lunch time and explained that he "needed chafing gel for his errmmm senstive skin".

He came back with a can of Gillete Ultra Sensitive Shave Gel. They had misunderstood his accent and he was too embarrassed not to buy it. :D

See above, RayCun's cotton-wool and tape, or if you prefer not having to reinvent the sticking plaster, plain old sticking plaster. Never run more than ten miles without the old nip plasters.

Don't forget to ice the nips regularly.

(that's not a serious suggestion, that last one)
